ive heard that this supposidly bolts up to the 2nd gen magnas engine. but could the transfer case be used as well. for awd. as it it could be aligned to go down where the current exhaust goes now. where the exhaust would then go only god knows

there is more to it, a different front cross member is required, the trans tunnel needs to be slightly bigger. there is a fair bit of work required
thats the engine of a gto inside the engine bay
I cant see the gearbox  I am sure it is under the battery
i can see the auto dipstick lol

how much work is required for the tranny tunnel and what is actually required?

Also from what i've heard, the AWD diamantes had a different floor plan which catered for the rear axle, i dont think there'd be enough room there in the FWD model?

yes the rear is completely different, the AWD run a full independent suspension system where as the 2wd 2nd gen magna runs the beam, the fuel tanks are different, it realy is almost chalk and cheese between the two cars, you atleast need both a AWD and 2WD and strip them to the bare chassis/body, to start comparing.

shouldnt you only need enough room for the drive shaft through the tranny tunnel, a new fuel tank, and a custom made diff so to use live axle not independant. the magnas live axle tortion bar anyway.

one term for the magna rear is a "torsion beam" a torsion "bar" suspension is completely different, in a torsion bar setup, there is two bars which are used as springs, and as the suspension travels the bars twist and work like a spring.
in the torsion beam, which is only ever used in the rear, as the suspension travels, (remeber it still runs coils, the beam allows a bit of flex, so the wheels can move independent of each other, but only slightly, thats why sometimes they are refered to as a semi-independent system.
a full live beam axle is a different thing once again.

but what im saying is you could put the springs ontop of the diff housing as in a live axle set up.

you relise the diff housing is in the centre of the rear, so you want to put the springs in the middle of the car?
re-read you post
anyway just stirring
i know what your thinking, but you will need custom axles and tubes made. will you run a panhard rod, or a watts link? as you will want to control sideways movement.
And you still need to mount it all, will the shape of the chassis be able to accomodate?

no idea if the chasis will take it, will talk to a chasis roll cage maker about it when i get a chance was thinking something like these to pics

i knew what you meant, as you can see, that mounts completely different to the 2nd gen magna coils, which inturn means chassis modification, which puts you back into the position of whether to do this or use a diamante rear. the major negative with the live rear axle is the amount of unsprung mass.

but with lsd easier to go sideways :D

i think it would be easier to use the magna rear and modify it. save hassles getting the diamante rear grafted on. means the chasis is only used as a mounting system instead of joining chasis together.

you don't need to cut and shut with the diamante, you would need to replicate the mounting points on the diamante chassis, to the magna chassis, (if the chassis is the same shape) then cut the floorwell etc, mounting the live axle will require a heap of strengthening work an custom fabricating, where the top of the springs mount will have to be fabricated and strengthened. in all honesty i think it may cost more to do the live axle, and you will end up with an inferior suspension sytem, which if used in an AWD, will not co-operate well with the front.
There is no simple way to get a diff in the rear of a 2nd gen magna. unless you are made of money.

In a 2WD GTO, i am led to believe that the magna and GTO boxes are the same, with different diffs. As for the AWD gearbox well obviously they would be very different

F5M3 is the magna/GTO 5 speed manual FWD gearbox, the 6 speed will bolt on...but as Jake has said there's a ****load more work than just slapping it together...I've looked into this myself...it's a VERY VERY expensive exercise...hence why I'm getting a new car instead.

The getrag 6 speed manuals weren't in the first series of GTO, so you'd have to look at the later one.
To be honest I'd be getting a GTO over doing the work to the magna. I seriously looked into it...it's a VERY expensive proposition!
