Iridium tip spark plugs are supposedly good for 60,000km IIRC.

I found a while back 'car hacks and mods for dummies.pdf'
It actually has a lot of non bogan type info in it, has a table on spark plugs that reads like this:

Plug Type: Copper
Pro's: Best Performance, Very Cheap
Con's: Needs to be changed very freequently (everytime you change your oil)

Plug Type: Iridium
Pro's: Copper like performance with longer life
Con's: Expensive and can come apart

Plug Type: Platinum
Pro's: Long Life with less cost than iridium
Con's: Not suitable for Turbo cars running alot of boost

Plug Type: Everything Else
Pro's: None
Con's: Gimmicky multi-electrode or conventional plugs - Avoid at all cost

Yes. I'm using them in my car presently.

No noticable difference between the NGK Iridium plugs and the mitsubishi supplied ones that they replaced.

I looked around today at Repco, and they wanted $25 per sparkie for the NKG Platinum. Is that a good price? Confused also what to get.

From what lachlan56 posted, do the platinum last longer than iridium?

Platinum's last 100000ks, Iridium 60000ks, regular copper 40000ks. Platinum doesnt conduct aswell as regular copper sparkplugs but there in the back cylinders of magnas cause of the fact you gotta take off the manifold to change them. Regular sparkplugs vs Iridium ones, you arnt gonna get any gain with Iridium ones, just a longer life. It's up to you, but regular ones only cost $2.50 each, less with trade discount :D

From memory, I paid about $12-14 ea for them, so $25ea is a bit steep. I rang around about half a dozen places and Supercheap were the cheapest.

Bugger it then. Might as well get iridium then. Cheaper and still lasts 60k. Will go iridium all around.

I checked earlier, but how do i take the front bank out? I unplug the spark lead, but the fuel rail is in the way. Is there a way around it, or do i have to loosen the rail first?

When i got my new timing chain put in at my last service (97,000kms) i told the mechanic that the log book says that the car needed platinum spark plugs also. He said to me that u don't really need to get them done? Is this correct or does this NEED to be done at 100,000kms? Reason for asking is that im going to book my car in for a minor service and to get a new engine mount put in so if the platinum plugs are a necessity then i will get them to do them at the same time.

If the logbook says it needs checking and replacement, then do it. As mentioned above, they only last 60 - 100k

You paying for the service, so they have to do it. Otherwise get them to make the service cheaper and do it yourself ;)

You can get the leads out without removing anything else - just have to manuever and muscle them a little bit - The one at the Throttle body end of the engine is hardest to get out because it has the shortest lead, but it can be done...... just use your muscles lol

In the log book it doesn't have a service to be done at 100,000kms. It just says the timing chain and and platinum spark plugs need to be changed/installed. The BIG service is done at 105,000kms.

From what i know yes you do need to change the plugs at the rear bank every 100000km its in the service logbooks unless platniums dont really need changing for longer than 100000km i dont know i just think your machinac lazy

The only 'benefit' you get from 'better' plugs is when you have plugs that have crapped themselves.

MMAL use cheap ones on the front and platnum on the rear for a reason. There's not point in paying extra money for something that's 'better' when you actually get no benefit from them.

I dont care how good spark plugs are.. i dont recon that anything is good for 60K.. i dont see the point for using them.. Its just a solution for lazy mechanics who dont want to show the appentice how to spend 5 mins and lift the plenum up and change the plugs every service.. or they are a load of crap that silly people with to much money but cause they think they are better..

Doesnt matter how good the plugs is.. when they have crap all over them they are all the same, doesnt matter what you payed for them...

Now a self cleaning plug would be good..:P
