Hey everyone,
I know some one has done this mode before....
I have the Premium 6 disc indash stacker unit, I am in the process of adding the remote to the steering wheel, and have got the right clockspring etc.
The remote lights up on the steering wheel, but wont control headunit.
How do I wire to the headunit?
Thanks heeeeeaps

Hi,
Yeah I have the premium headunit, and have sourced the remote and correct clockspring.
The remote lights up, but doesn't operate the unit.
On the back of the premium unit there is the two plugs. The main plug has power/speakers etc. The second plug on mine only has the one wire for the telephone mute, but I can see that there is six pins there, so guessing some of these pins may work the remote.
Anyone that already has the premium unit with remote (or a factory manual), would be awesome if they could help out (especially what wires they have going into that second plug, and where they connected.
All help greatly appreciated

Ok thanks heaps.
Mine only has one wire going into it, and its for the telephone mute. The remote has two wires, and I'm guessing only one needs to go to the back of the headunit, as the remote is already lighting up, just won't work the headunit. So one wire must be power, and the other to control? Sound right?? Would be awesome if you could help out as to where that second wire goes, as there is 6 pins there. (wonder what the other four pins for:)

Hey all,
You need a different clockspring. The standard clock spring only has cable's and plugs for airbag, horn, and cruise, so you need the one that has cable and plug for the steering wheel remote. I had to change my clockspring anyway as was faulty (cruise wasn't turning off and on properly)
The clockspring was quoted at $279, but gave it to me for $259.....so yeah not cheap, and wouldnt' have bothered just for sake of adding remote.
Was lucky as got steering remote and casing very cheap, as have heard its very expensive from Mitsubishi.
If you can source both the clock spring and remote/housing cheap, then it is a fairly simple wiring job, as the clock spring will already power on the remote. Its then simply a matter of running one cable from steering column clock spring connection to the back of premium cd unit. (pity Mitsubishi didn't already do this, but wasn't hard>>
On the back of the premium unit there is the main plug that has power/speakers etc.
There is then a second smaller aux plug, which has one wire running to it on TJ and above Magna's. The wire that is already there is for the telephone mute, as TJ and above are pre-wired for handsfree. The pin directly below this is for steering wheel remote.
After finishing must say that was very happy with the result, you soon get spoiled having the steering wheel remote, and it is even backlit!!!
Now would love to know what the other four unused pins are for on the aux pin???? Anyone with a factory manual who can assist?
I'm guessing its if you want to run your mobile phone handsfree through the factory speakers, but only a guess.
Im happy to offer further instructions to anyone who decides to undertake this mod, but in the long run it would be alot cheaper/easier to buy a aftermarket remote headunit. (mind you I like the standard premium unit, and having the remote now is awesome)

So how many extra cables does the clockspring supply?

The standard clockspring has airbag, horn, cruise cables and plugs, (as pictured) whilst the one designed for the steering wheel remote will have one more cable and plug for the steering wheel remote. (I have roughly drawn in where this cable is located on the attached picture Hope this makes sense. If you have the clockspring and steering wheel remote/housing it is a fairly easy job which I am happy to offer further instructions if needed.
Goodluck

I only ask as I want to use the extra cables for shift buttons. So I suppose you would only need 2 and a ground but someone with more intimate knowledge of the tiptronic transmision could correct me.

I bought a 2nd hand clockspring recently off a Verada hoping it had the radio control wiring, looks like I got one off an Ei so looks like a no go. But hey thanks for that pic, i'll compare that with the one i've got and confirm whether it has the radio control wiring as well.
If it is definitely off an ei, I might just take the clockspring apart and see if theres a way to safely add my own extra wire (or two) into it. I can't justify $250 just for steering wheel mounted controls just yet!
Greenmatt: Yeah three wires would be the simplest option, but i'm sure theres already a common ground coming through the clock spring, so that means you'll only need two. But of course using digital techniques you could even just use one signal wire!

Hi,
I took my old faulty clockspring apart, out of interest. There is definately no way to add an extra wire, it would be impossible with the way it is set up. Its designed so you can't repair, tamper, or modify it. The way it is setup when you take the casing off, it renders it useless!! I guess with good reason considering it works the airbag:)
Also there is a common ground through the clockspring, so the two audio wires might be all you need greenmatt.........
