I'm looking at renting a car in Melbourne for a week. Which car rental companies have 380s for rent?

I take it you can't rent a VRX from anywhere though?

Thrifty

$47 a day, unlimited km's, and a $16 daily excess if you're under 25. It was something similar to that when i rented

Yep, Thrifty is by far the best option if you want to rent a 380. They are the only car rental co that can GUARANTEE 100% a 380 (barring the unforeseen) and they're also the only ones who allow under 25's to rent a 380. They mainly have base models and LS (LS same price as base but no guarantee of variant). They also have the 380 GT but more expensive and must be over 25.

Europcar also have the Falcon in the same category. Hertz corporate locations (city, inner suburban and airport) do not have the 380 or Magna/Verada, however franchisee branches (ie Newcastle, Woollongong, Geelong, Frankston, Werribee, country areas) have any car they like. For example Europcar don't have Commo's and never will (CEO is Ford fan!) but a franchise branch like Werribee will have'em.

That is because Mitsubishi owns part of Thrifty.

Europcar did not guarantee me a 380. They said "a type XX car" .. .****in. The internet booking sheet showed a 380 picture.

I rock up at airport.. brisbane.. get given a TW Magna.. with a busted passenger seat, reeks of cigga smoke.. filthy outside (oh, we have water restrictions).. I said.. I want my 380.. this piece of sh.. is not good enough. Half hour later.. I get my 380.

Sorry to hear that mate, understand your frustration, but at least you got a 380 in the end...:doubt: . Did you book online or over the phone? Online always cheaper unless you want specific requests or have a discount voucher etc.

You'll see when you book online it says "...or similar." The picture of the 380 is an example of the CLASS of car (in this case 'FCAR') which consists of 'full-size 6-cylinder auto sedans'. In this category you could have gotten a BAII XT, TW ES, or 380 base/VRX. This is the case with ALL major car rental companies in at least SOME of their vehicle categories. I used to work for Europcar and the reason why we can't guarantee a specific make is because:

1) most branches other than city and airport (corporate branches) are franchises who more or less have whatever vehicle they wish on their fleet. During peak times cars get shifted between all branches to cope with additional demand.

2) more than 90% of customers do not request a make, after all it's a rental and not a purchase. But we do try to honour specific vehicle requests where possible.

If you did call, requested a 380, and got a TW that a) was dirty, and b) faulty passenger seat, well you had every right to have a rant at them - clearly wasn't ready and I hope they didn't charge extra for the 380 (our brisy airport branch is notorious for this).

Anyways hope the 380 served you well, and if it was a VRX, I reckon it did!:D

Slightly offtopic sorry:

This definitely has not been my experience on numerous occasions. I always shop online for the 'market' web prices, then call up the 1300 number.

The salespeople on the phone are after a sale (I'm sure they work on incentive targets), and are always able to put together a better deal than the online price. I've never had a voucher either, just explained that I was after a better detal.

True, I must admit the web isn't ALWAYS cheaper, but more often than not it is. I used to work in the Europcar call centre and yes we're all after a sale and will do what is necessary within the rules (sometimes beyond the rules!) to get a sale.

But if you haggle us enough we will find a way;) to either match or better a deal you have from someone else, and if you say "but hang on your website says... etc etc" we'll do it. But if you spoke to me and were gullible enough you'd be getting ripped off! That's what's great (or not so great) about the car rental business - we could charge whatever we wanted (within competitive reason).
