I have a TL magna and I have just started Sound Deadening my boot. I found that a significant rattle was coming from an air vent on the lower left rear quarter panel. the vent is partially obscured by the auto antenna assembly but it apears to be a one way vent. ie, it lets air out bit 'flaps' prevent much getting in.

these 'flaps' are what rattle.

I am wondering what others have done to elimanate this problem.

I am thinking that I will prop the flaps open slightly with some thing foam. this will still allow the vent to let stuff out but it will also let a little in (I dont think it will be a problem though).

Cheers

Those flaps monitor and regulate the amout of carbon dioxide entering from the exhaust etc. Removing these can be dangerous to your passengers health, I personally wouldnt recomend it.

Keep the ski hole shut... I think reducing the rattles is more important than a little carbon dioxide. Remember that the carpet still goes over the top so its not all doom and gloom.

Never had anyone complain and I have had them open all the way to QLD ( from Sydney ) with 3 people in the car. :D

you're not going to die from harmful gases from you exhuast by removing a rubber flap lol you might if there was a pipe going from your muffer into your cabin while u keep it at 6000rpm for a few minutes.

yeah, i ductaped mine.

so are they actually connected to some sort of monitoring electronics? or do they simply allow exhauset gas to escape the boot.

If its the latter, then what harm can wedging them slightly open cause?

From my understanding these would be part of the air circulation of the car. The exit of the ducting is placed in an area that, when the car is in motion, is a low pressure area. This then opens the flaps and allows air to escape.

They aren't there to remove exhaust gases from the boot. If you're getting gases in your boot then your exhaust or seals are prolly rooted.

There shouldn't be any problem with closing shut these flaps, but if you could place foam (possibly that window sealing stuff) so that they seal up, but also allow movement that'd be the best option.

The exhaust is on the opposite side of the car so i highly doubt that any gasses from it will get into the boot

arent these on both sides?

and its gas.... itll probably do what it likes in terms of where it goes. you probably wouldnt need that big a hole to let it get in

I only found one vent, on the opposite side to the muffler, on my TJ exec when I removed the rear bumper recently.

If you are standing at the back of your car looking into the open boot - the vent is basically on the back corner of the rear passenger side wheel arch. Remove the carpet/moulding on the left, rear most section of your boot (behind the wheel arch) and you should find it.

oh ok, i swear there was one on each side of my boot, ill check again when i pull all my boot out this weekend.

either or, exhaust gas could probs still work its way into the boot

There is only one on the left hand side when you stick your head in the boot. Where the aerial is it is between that and the wheel arch and is quite low. Looks like a black plastic box with flaps, you can't really miss it!!

Open them and 1 lot of rattles will disappear!
