Broken change fork?

Dunno... maybe drop the oil and see if there's much metal bits floating.
If so its time to rip it apart and see what's fractured.

have same problem on my TE, jus being fixed now. as said b4, it is probably a case of the bearings and seals needing to be changed. this was the case for my car.

price wise...

i got quotes from gearbox repair specialists for about $1000-$1500 depending on the damage done. however have taken it to a trusted mechanic and he is reddoing the box for about $700. jus so u know what ur up against :)

the problem being, after talking to alot (ALOT lol ) of people, each one said that you need to get it done ASAP and shouldnt drive the car as this will deteriorate rapidly and u can never be sure when it will actually go.

best of luck mate!!

describe the noise.

I've got a low volume noise when the clutch is out in neutral, basically it sounds like a shaft is turning in the gearbox but not as smooth as it should be (thrust bearing?).

The thing is, it's made the noise for two years now so I thought it was normal. I had the clutch replaced in Jan, which meant the gearbox had to come out, and put back in. Though the noise still ocurred after the clutch was replaced.

My mechanic didn't tell me there was anything wrong though when he took it out.

If the noise goes away when you put your foot on the clutch, its the thrust bearing.

I agree, if other bearings are gone the sound should always be evident.

Mine does the same thing, its a high pitched noise that goes away when the clutch pressed. So how much would it cost to get fixed, and how long should I expect it to last (its been doing it for about 3000km).

input shaft bearing im pretty sure...thats what it was on my car...its a pretty loud hi pitch squeel eh..annoying as dogs balls

thrust bearing can do this also but mine was too loud to be thrust bearing

When in Neutral and clutch out something rattles in the engine bay, put the clutch back in again and it goes away. Is this a similar thing to what you guys are talkin bout?
I was talkin to a mate about this and he has an Auto TJ, and it has the same rattle, even though its an Auto, so i thought it must be normal... Is it?

Yep, nail on the head.

Unfortunatly its a box out replacement job, and while your there you may as well replace the clutch disc and or pressure plate.

Its the bearing which presses on to the diaphram to disengage the clutch. When the clutch is in, they are unloaded and the play developed over time causes them to be noisy. Once loaded up they dont have any play to rattle around, so go quiet.

Have you heard the rattle in your mates auto TJ?? If so, is it an identical sound?

I'd wager that the rattle described by the TJ auto owner is associated with the "engine pipes" or cast factory headers. Apparently it originates from one of the metal gaskets in there, and is common amoung many 3.5L 3rd gens.

Yes the sound is identical. So i dont understand why the box rattles. It has done since i bought it 2 months ago from a dealer. Should i take it back and tell em to fix it?
