hi all ive done research and was told not to touch sonys. i really want a usb direct input but might cope with an auxillery input, which brings me to these two headunits. the pioneer deh-p6850mp which retails for around $629 but i can get for $419 off ebay
http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/images/products/deh_p6850mp_es.jpg
http://www.pioneeraus.com.au/car_entertainment/cdtuners/dehp6850mp/index.html
and thats all the techy stuff
the JVC kd-g825 which retails for around $449 but i can get for $389 off ebay
http://i13.ebayimg.com/03/i/06/d4/c0/26_1_b.JPG
http://www.jvc-australia.com/products/_products_sub_group_details.asp?ID=1500
all the techy stuff for the jvc
HELP ME I HAVE NO IDEA WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE!! do i go biggest bargain or functionality because i personally like the JVC but then the PIONEER keeps entering my mind
I would steer clear of ebay for starters. A lot of people have been burnt.
I dont really have an opinion on the headunits though. I would think they will both do the job perfectly.

ebay has been very reliable for me though as i have bought over 50 things and no complaints plus the seller of the pioneer and jvc both have basically 100% positive feedback

ok, do u really need the aux inputs on the front? could u not just run the wires to somewhere in ur dash, maybe have some nice jacks mounted somewhere on the dash/near the gear stick?
i say this because i recently got the outdated Eclipse CD8445 for $500, this deck used to retail for $850, and has a ticket price of $550 now! ring around and u might still find it! bloody awesome deck, and has more specs than the above 2 units.

I would go the JVC purely because i like the look better and I have had a few JVCs now and love their quality and features. Think they are a awesome HU for their price tag.

Why steer clear of sony? I find their headunits are pretty good. Dunno about value for money, but they are pretty reliable from what i've seen.

Incedently i spent the last few hours installing the exact jvc unit into a mates 3 series BMW... Cant really say anything of the sound quality as that system as some major issues with engine whine and random noise, from a bad ground i suspect, nothing to do with the headunit..
However i did like the abilty to change the colour of the headunit to match the orange of the car, and the ability to upload your own movies into the headunit to play in monochrome is quite cool, the usb function is cool also.
My mate got the headunit from JB-HiFi for 375 iirc so a good deal can be had from them
OOOOOOOOOOOOH!
you can get .. if ur lucky (or you pm me :P), the new Clarion dxz865/6 for around 650$
I installed mine about a month ago, touch screen, motorised everything, change colors and movies on the touch screen.. awsome quality too :D
Keeps me amused more than the old dvd player.
yeah...can't go wrong with JVC...
most USB and memory stick readers these days are still pretty slow...as in it takes a few seconds to load, and it also takes a bit of effort to 'seek' in tracks n stuff. Its not as fast as a conventional CD thats all.

sony make fantastic TV's, HiFi's, portable personal audio. but when it comes to car sound, they are pretty much just a gigantic marketing machine. they have saturated the market with their ads, banking on their good rep with other audio gear to carry onto their car stuff.

whats the deal with the aux. input anyway, does that mean that i still have to search through songs on the mp3 player to get them to play, and i guess it would play the songs quicker than if i had the usb mass in the slot

out of the two i would go for the JVC unit as i prefer their sound quality over Pioneer (although i think the pioneer looks betta)
but to be really honest... i like Alpine head units the best!! they are my choice

Yeh AUX just plays whatever input it's given, so yes you iwll have to change songs on the mp3 player.

My JVC is awesome, wont ever look back to other brands for HU, great looking, sh*tloads of features, even AUX in....what i like about the Front AUX is you can switch between DVD player/PS2/MP3 player with just another wire...........although with all the wires my car is looking a tad messy lol
But from me, i give JVC my

Each to their Own but I have Found the Following
1 Kenwood.. Most unlreliable Decks Ever
All the same problems as normal Decks , Just alot more frequent.
The rest seem fine..
Know Problems with Sony Develope usually around the 13month time.
1. CD Eject and Insert motors and Guides Fail
2. CD laser Tracking can also go
3. Some Sony Decks offer too much Sound Variation and Can Send Clipped Signals without the User knowing..
4. Big internal Amps and Huge Heatsinks tend to cause Heat problems in Small Dash spaces leading to Overheating problems..
JVC has improved 300% from when they once began and I have the JVC KDG615 and Wont be Changing anytime soon..
Pioneers look nice but make sure it offers 3 Pairs of RCA out puts for full sound control.
Some Pioneer Decks offer Front and Rear out with Selectable Subwoofer out meaning that the rear RCA can be Either Rear or Sub but not both..

Hey dude,
I'm selling my Pioneer 6850 if ur still interested. It is a great unit. I'm just upgrading to tv/dvd unit.
Running stock speakers, Amp and subs... sound extremely clean, and very nice!
It's still practically brand new.

i had 2 JVC units, both were perfect when i sold them, as i was just upgrading to the next model, i think the 1st one i had is still going in one of my brothers friends cars! (would be at least 4 years old now)
the other one i had (sh9105) got stolen after i sold that one to my brother (teach him to leave his commodore parked on the side of the road in prospect every night!) even for its $1000 price tag, it was the best unit i'd seen in a long time, GO JVC!

The 6850MP has front, rear and subwoofer RCA outs.
I've got a 6850MP. Wouldn't have a clue how it compares to the JVC, but I'm happy with it :)

i ahve the Pioneer DEH-P1Y the slightly better version of this. I love the way that all the outputs are completely controllable, i even believe this model has Low pass and high pass filters for the sub and speakers. which is great, i would go the pioneer as thats my personal opinion, i bought mine for $400 from JL with extended warranty (with head units i normally buy from a store because i want the warranty) but on amps and speakers ebay all the way.

ive had a few sony's and they have all gone back to the shop.
i had the pioneer 8450 and i loved it! awesome unit! not one bit of trouble with it.
my old man has a pioneer also, paid about $300 new..and he ALWAYS has trouble ejecting cd's. but maybe this is because its a cheaper one to my old pioneer?
now i have a jvc and i find it good aswell. although i find it very slow to read mp3s, and slow to skip tracks a few at a time...but hey, its got everything and the quality is great.

interesting topic, as im looking for similar head units at similar prices at the moment as well!
I must say i was impressed with the JVC HU i installed in my bro's car the other week. Wasnt a huge fan on the little buttons on the left of it, but it sounded good, and looked nice, and was well priced!

To be honest, i find the sound quality out of my JVC exactly the same as my older pioneer...although the pioneer had a $hitload of extra sound altering options on it which was unreal!
i think at the end of the day you're taking a risk buying any brand of headunit. each brand has their pro's and con's, and each brand can have dodgey products in a series....
The JVC is ipod ready and a USB slot which i would love on my one. so thats an advantage over the pioneer...
and i think i read it right...the JVC has 5volt RCA's and the pioneer only has 4volt? lol not much of a difference but maybe something to consider?
i do like the look of the pioneer although a hate that HUGE volume knob!
id have to go with the JVC mate. the iPOd ready and USB features would be my highest priority on my next unit if i ever get need one (touch wood i wont!)

hmmmm sorry for bringing this thread back up, but there was no point making a new one.
Can anyone tell me whats the difference between the JVC deck originally posted, and this one:
http://www.jvc-australia.com/products/_products_sub_group_details.asp?ID=1501
Just seems to be the lower end JVC deck, but as far as i could see in the shop both had 50w x 4, 5V triple preouts, USB, MP3, etc.
Is the only difference the ability to download movies into it, as someone before mentioned?
Its over $100 cheaper....
Sry saw this thread and had to post...
Eclipse is the go with head units for high volume. I have a 5425 deck which was worth about $400 last year when it come out, and it has 5v pre-outs, dual pre-outs with sub control, full flip face and all the normal crap like 4x50w and MP3/WMA and absolutely hammers when you hook amps up to it.
My 2c
Edit: I just bought a low priced $300 JVC DVD head unit, and its crap. The controls have some delay or lag on them when you press a button three times it takes more than a second to get to the third song, so you have to go from like track 1 to track 10 really slowly and its just crap. After it hits track 10 it takes ages to play also. That is with normal cd's too, not just mp3s. I have JVC speakers all around in my car, and just replaced the back ones with sony xplods temporarily while I concentrate on getting more bass and bigger amps, and they are just terrible quality and crap output. Ive seen the light in the Jaycar response gear. Best stuff you can get for a sub $3000 stereo to pump.
