hi guys

I just got my car back from russals automatic specialists they said that my tranny had a fair bit of deposet on my magnet and the color of the oil was a bit dark and my 2 gear change was to long then the guy said they dont have a filter on the 2000 models up and it was on of the most stupid things mitsubishi could of done and said that youll have to get a flush next service to get everything out and said that you have to do the services more reguly with the none filter models just wanted people to be aware of servicing your tranny is impotant.

Im sure you could use another filter from an older model that has the same gearbox

my understanding is that on the 1996-2000 Te/f/h and Ke/f/h the tranny filter is just below the airbox (is on my KE) and on the TJ onwards there is no filter, just a kinda gauze filter thingy inside the gearbox itself...could be wrong though....

Nah you are right. TE/TF/TH KE/KF/KH had the transmission filter which was drrpped in the TJ/KJ onwards.
Yeah i have spoken to the guys who do my tranny flushes and they said it was a stupid move to get rid of it but Mitsubishi trying to save a buck probably said to themselves that over the warranty period of the car, the chances of something going wrong due to lack of a filter is minimal if none so they save themselves some money and do away with it.

Ihave had my KE and KH done with filter and magnet has always been spotless.
Have kad KJ done without filter and like yours, the magnet was covered in like a sludge.

Would definately reccomend people without filters dont leave it longer than 40,000k's without full power flush for maximum transmission life.

Well I have a filter and the magnet was still covered in sludge lol

First time I did it, so perhaps previous owner neglected it. Flushed some clean stuff through to get rid of as much as I could.

How ofter should I change it on a KE 4spd with an occasional lead foot???

Have always been wondering if its possible to retrofit the spinon filter to the later trannys.

Casting of the case has the filter interface already there... could be as simple as tapping
out the hole (but will need tranny dismantled to open up the case).

russels automatics reccomend a service every 20000km and that cost $90 but i think every 30 40km. By the way my late 2000 model TH dosent have a filter

Easy way to add a filter to tj and on autos is to add a dedicated trans oil cooler and plumb in a spin on filter or in-line filter in to new oil lines.

They actually do have an internal filter that is meant to last the life of the transmission. Good or Bad....I don't know but the fact that the metallic deposits are on the drain plug means it's working the plug is at least working.

I can't recommend the power flush highly enough. Easy to do at home, just buy 3 x 5L bottles of mitsu fluid and do it yourself. There is a writeup in these forums.

Had dedicated external ATF cooler plus an inline filter on the TN
which also had the auto serviced professionally every 20,000...

... still blew up at 200,056km.
