What are tappets, and why do some ppl experience tapping noises with them?

Most of these guys could probably explain it better than me...

They fit over the valve springs so the cam lobes (or followers, lifters, etc...depends on the design of the engine) can "push" your valves open. When you hear a tapping noise coming from them, it usually means the clearance between the top of the tappet and the cam/follower/lifter) is incorrect.

Yeah the noise is most commonly caused by lack of oil.

And the description above is right :D

as kill billy said is correct above post but using incorrect oil all so makes them tap as well i know looked at magna with bilo oil in it and tapped like shit

wow, i was shocked to see that it actually is a serious question :lol:
i hope this noise isn't coming from under your bonnet, if so check your oil, and top it up if necessary, if it's full, and i think ur still under warrenty, take it back

are they suppose to be loud ????? i dunno how tapping sounds like but my engine doesnt really sound right... :?
