The TS 2.6 Saga continues....
Just got the coil fixed...running great .....now the auto!!!
Symptoms....From start up it will take off in 1st, shift to 2nd, then 3rd but wont engage 4th! Stop at the lights and it takes off in 2nd into 3rd, NO 4th. I have set the fluid level, adjusted the selector cable, tried to multi test the inhibitor switch but the connector is different than that in the manual. Have check the overdrive switch, it is ok.
Had a strange sound coming from the tranny when I switch on the ignition and engage Drive with the engine stopped. It seems to be coming from the front where I assume the 4th gear solenoid wire goes in.
Any Thoughts Welcome.......or off to the Tranny Doc??

Thanks Moz!!

This is a common fault, push the O/D off button for now to make it drive right in the first three gears and then give Magna Buff a yell on how to fix the problem.

Its not an engine out repair.:)

If you are trying to start the car in drive then it is not going to turn on, this is the same on all autos, you can only start the car in Neutral and park.

Will do Ol'Fart but suspect deeper problem.....had the tranny on the ground and turned it on it's back to pull the converter. don't know if i've upset something in the valve body.

the end clutch are prone to burning out, i'd say just buy and end clutch repair kit and throw in it shoudl be good after that, we use to do at least one a week when i managed an auto shop

The feature of this problem is that I can stop, switch off, start again and it will take off in 1st. But it wont reselect 1st again until I switch off and on again.

To All who helped with there advise.....I finally got to the electrics and found that on pulling the engine, I had inadvertantly crushed one of the pulse generators on the Auto Transaxle....$200 later It's on the road and flying like a new car...smooth and silky with heaps of punch.

Thanks to Magna buff and Ol' Fart...and any one else who helped.

im a bit late, i had this problem in my TM , and it was registereing and error code and would go into like a failsafe mode to protect the gearbox and wouldnt go to certain gears but would allow you to still get home
glad you got the problem fixed tho :D

oh and the pulse generators...are they just like some wires/power cables? cause if so thats what i got fixed too.... lol

I thought pulse generator is what detects your speed (and therefore things like "you must be going at least 50 in A/T mode before O/D will kick in").

my mother in law bought a tr at auction a few months back, of course we didn't drive it before we bought it (coz u cant)so i drove it home after purchase, it went like this..... first(ok)....second(ok)......third(ok).... overdrive....(oooops who selected neutral) long story short it is to do with the o'drive servo and it can be fixed without removing the trans at a cost of $250 - $300, that's what it cost her anyway take it to your local auto specialist...

Thats right Messymagna but if the pulse generators aren't operating then the control unit will assume a fault and the TPS and kickdown and will not talk to the control unit and the thro the whole thing into Limp mode. If the command to change is broken ..then it won't....after changing the crushed PG and the one with a pulled wire ...it hasn't gone better since it was new....I think that speaks for itself!! The only other problem would have been a cracked drive band....it will drive in 2nd ok until it finally breaks ..then it wont do nothin but third.
