Q)What are tappets, and why do some ppl experience tapping noises with them?

A)They fit over the valve springs so the cam lobes (or followers, lifters, etc...depends on the design of the engine) can "push" your valves open. When you hear a tapping noise coming from them, it usually means the clearance between the top of the tappet and the cam/follower/lifter) is incorrect.

the noise is most commonly caused by lack of oil.

using incorrect oil all so makes them tap as well
