I'm going to pick up a motor soon from the wreckers just so I can pull it apart complety and play around with it.

My question is, do I need an engine stand and a crane, or is there another way?

an engine stand would help alot but u could put it on a bench or 2 sawhorses and just get a few mates and lift it they're not all that heavy

Yeah, just I dont really want to fork out the extra cash if I dont have to.

If I sit the engine on a bench, would I have to jam it between some things or would it stand up by itself?

depends on the engine i used to have a CA18DETT and a RB26 which i played around with.
my suggestion is dont worry bout the stand just get some bricks and hold the engine up with them and spend the rest on a good set of air tools (come in handy)

Depending on sump shape, some engines will stand up themselves. Others not.

I wouldn't really put the whole engine on top of the bench - too hard to work on.

Best place for a spare engine is to buy a cheap 4-wheel trolley, put an old tyre on it
and put the engine on top. Makes it very easy to move around too.

Can u weld?
if so make a box frame for it to sit on, then use the old engine mounts and weld them to the frame.
I used some old patio tube off cuts to make the top rectangle then welded some legs to the underside of that. Made it about 700 off the ground so you can get to the sump ect.
Weld some braces to the legs and yer in bussiness.
I did this for a nissan L2.0et import engine to see if it would run. Had problems with the ecu wiring because i could not find a wiring diagram for it.
Hooked up the fuel pump. Had to make my own ignition igniter, but after all the hicups it finally fired into life.
It was good at nite with 50/50 methanol petrol, you could crank up the revs and see nice blue flame from the exhaust and the sweet whine from the turbo... much to the annoyance of the neighbours... he he he..
Now if only i could bolt up a cheap dyno.... maybe an old auto with a disc brake or two bolted to the end of the out put shaft...

Yup, going to have a bench in the garage where its going to sit.

Have girders on the roof, could make a pully, but scared ill rip the roof down lol

Would 3 people be able to lift it up? possibly a 4th?

I'd be askin around to see if anyone has a stand they can lend you. It'll make what you wanna do a hell of a lot easier. You bolt the end plate to the donk then get a coupla big guys to lift it into the stand. You'll be able to flip the engine over and work on it so easily.
If you were up here i'd loan ya mine:D

easy, engines ain't that heavy.

Small jap 4cyl probably no more than 100kg for short motor, another 30kg for tranny.

We had an Austin 7 motor lying about before (4cyl 700cc) and that was about 50kg,
could shift it single person.
