View Full Version : Clear indicators! The easy way!

Ok so here is my guide on clear indicators - the easy way!

Follow these steps:

Slowly work the blinker cover off with a flat head screw driver. From the bottom, where the small tabs are.
Lift off the cover. This can be tough as the cover is stuck with gum.
Use the screw driver to unscrew the orange plastic cover.
Place the cover back on, firmly.

There you have it! Clear indicators!
You can grab Orange replacement light bulbs from super cheap for around $20!
No need for breaking the orange light or swearing (haha Paul :P)

I'd looked at that, but thought the "gummy" glue had to be softened first in an oven, and didn't want to risk stuffing it.
Also made more sense to me to tint/mask the inside rather than the outside.

PS. Might be an idea to remove the globe before doing any of this...

He'd probably be using an orange globe..
but ud still see the reflection of the orange globe slightly.. hmm

good work tho, looks cool!

Don't know if he's got one installed in those photos, but I think the idea is to get the "chrome" orange ones, that look silver but flash orange. Having globes that look orange normally would defeat the purpose.

I'm not sure about the legalities of this, I think if the light is designed for ADR in a certain way, you can't modify it, even if it still flashes the same colour. I think the orange is a part of the design, so there might be legal pitfalls. Not that a cop will pull you up for it, but insurance stooges might. Anyone knowledgeable about ADR compliance here?

He definitely only has the clear/white in those photos, but I assume this is to be rectified

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA :bowrofl:

Off goes the cover, in goes the clear indicator bulbs and your set! :P

I'm using the phillips clear indicator bulbs which flash as amber but look clear from the outside. $20 from autobarn.
They're great!
You can also get different brand ones for $15.99 but it has a different offset and wont sit in the bulb section. So be careful when buying them as I had to return a pair today as they didn't fit at all. Luckily I tried them out in the car park

This is a great mod because it really does make a difference to the car's appearance!
I thought before, na it doesn't matter. But with them out, it looks wayyyyy better!
Next step is getting VT clear side indicators.

So, there is no need to heat them up in an oven to soften the gum?
Do they stick back together okay too? (any leakage problems afterwards?)
Sounds like a much better way than the old poke, twist, break, swear... method.

I've got the Phillips 'Chrome' Bulbs in mine too, had them for about 1-2 years - no problems so far.

yeah go the 380 ones man. i think the pajeros and some lancers also use the same ones also.
VT ones look Schitty on all cars, not just magnas paul...i think the magna styling is TOO advanced for Holden spares lol!

btw, the last time i checked...380 blinkers were about $50 each from mits..
if you find them cheaper let us know. im spewing i didnt buy a pair off that guy who was in singapore at the time... :(

dimi108
21-06-2006, 08:11 PM
Yup. No need to heat them up.
Just carefully remove the front plastic off. It rained hard today on the way home. No water getting in or nothing like that So no need to worry.

I'll look into these 380 clear side indicators. Do they come with the bulb too?
$100 for a set of clear indicators is steep. They better be good.
I'll check them out.

Sure these will fit??

Dunno about 1st gens, but 2nd gens, 3rd gens, 380, some pajeros and lancers all share the EXACT same mould for indicators. Only the magna's never got the clear ones, only the pajeros/lancers and now the 380  .

In another car I own (a *****mobile), I have changed the blinkers to clear. I bought those silvered orange blinkers. They look great when they aren't working, but are not very bright when they are working. I like fully sik only if it is fully functional. Uleh.

i like the 3rd gen blinkers that have the black platsic inside rather than the chrome that the 2nd gen has it would suit the parras so much better its hard to get the blinkers to match the parras i used nightshades that looks good but still isnt perfect. has anyone seen an offspin of the 3rd gen that could fit in a 2nd or someone that has modded the 2nd to look like 3rd.

woah confusing..

Wow, they really do look awesome!!

see i was stupid when installing mine, i cut my old ones off and wired my new ones in, when i could of just switched the cases or something, oh well!:doubt:

Just have to lower the car, either the cheap way (Just Springs @ about $280 installed) or the expensive but proper way (Springs and shockies @ about $700 or so installed) and WOW that will be one HOT ride there.

i think the only thing you would need to have done is get it detailed so that the rest of the car is as shinesy as the front bumper.
Gonna get a nice stereo in there? i see your using everything stock atm, quite a shame really:P

Yeah sounds like a good plan :D
The only reason i'm using stock radio at the moment is because I like the sound. It's quite powerful. Way better than a set of 6x9's and the car has it's own amplifier under the centre arm rest box! And I don't want to spoil the look of the centre console by putting in after market head unit. Make it look cheap.
I might go for the in car DVD.

Take a look at the second pic. What kind of stock head unit was this one? Looks like a sat nav one!! :sook:

The lenses have an "amber" section inside which is fastened by a small screw driver.
So once you pop out the front lense cover, the amber part will show and just unscrew that off and replace the lense cover again and it's all done!

How different are the para headlights to the normal ones, apart from the black? Ive considered trying to open up a pair of normal ones and build a black painted sheetmetal or similar insert to make it look like paras and save a bit, but ive never been close enough to a real set to touch them and see if the reflector design is different.

RoGuE_StreaK
11-02-2010, 09:04 PM
Well for starters a big difference is that their lenses are clear, not the diffused/fresnel setup of the normal lights. Except for the yank/euro ones, which DO have a fresnel lense.
I'm not sure about the internal structure of normal ones, my old ones I couldn't particularly see into them well enough to get an idea. Maybe you could drop by your local wreckers if they are the type that let you browse, see if you can find a broken light so you can see what the inside looks like. I'd stay clear of the sheet metal, black paint may look OK if you clean up the interior of your lenses. I've half considered this as an option if I was to ever get an earlier model 3rd gen, as apparently the 3rd gen paras actually give off worse light than the standard lights, whereas the 2nd gen paras do actualy give better lighting.

The reflectors probably are different, as paras are, well, parabolic; I'm guessing the standard reflectors aren't shaped as accurately or something like that.

[EDIT] Some pics here (http://www.saleonline.net.au/products.cfm?categoryid=554&subcategoryid=1678) might give you some more clues. Looks maybe like the high-beam reflector on the standard lights has a more square outline rather than the round of the high on the paras. Might still look interesting with the standard border painted black/dark. Better than those stickers that go on the outside, like some commodores had.

TiMi
12-02-2010, 07:16 PM
Yeah ive seen the stickers and thought of painting the inside of the glass if i could find clear ones, but it looks like the black part inside has depth as well. Ive liked them before i even knew the difference between a magna and a verada =P but after the wreckers asking $250 a light im too scarred to pull a set apart to see if i can copy them.

RoGuE_StreaK
12-02-2010, 09:11 PM
I wasn't saying paint the glass, I was saying to paint the actual surround, or lip, of the reflectors. ie., take the glass off and paint the flat surface you find. But as you say, on the paras the black actually goes in a little way into the actual "reflector" section, but I'd suggest starting with the flat section first and seeing how it looks before chewing into the reflector's real-estate.
With a good clean of the standard lenses, it should definitely be noticeable, won't look identical to paras but could look interesting if done properly.

Price-wise, you should easily be able to get a pair of standard headlights for under $50, paras are definitely more expensive but you should be able to source them for around $250 for a pair, not each.
