hey all, installing a new headunit on weekend (pioneer DEH6800MP) and have decided that i have had enough of the crackling paperconed dash speakers. So..... anyone got a suggestion on some speakers to replace the stock dash ones, or even some for the front doors, as destroying door trim is a specialty of mine.

Well I have the Pioneer DEH-P1Y looks extremely silimar to yours. The indash speakers are only 4 inch which quite frankly are crap to listen to, you can't get any bass below say 100hz with those and they sound poxy.
I firstly installed some pioneer 4" two way speakers, as the magnet is deeper on most replacement speakers i had to cut a hole out for the magnet to actually fit in the dash as well as two of the mounting screen brackets on the side of the speaker.

I put a pair of JL Splits in the doors (mounted crossovers under the dash out of sight) and ran the two sets of wires through the grommet in the door. If you have map holders on the door cards you will need to take them off in order to install a 6 inch woofer. I wasn't happy so i amped these splits with an alpine 2X150watt rms amplifier and now its up to a suitable standard.

When you install them if you need and help or advice give me a yell

hmmm... i think i will go for door speakers then, but just something simple, not after much bass as am running a woofer already, just want something vocal for the front as the 6x9s vocals get drowned out by the bass, how about some 6" 4 way speakers? will they do what i want?

man get a pair of splits theyd be the most vocal you can get 6" will be the trick and i reckon mount the tweeters like tufftr's looks good and is functional

Correction - not functional.....listen to em first....these dont sound as good as they could of been.

Charlos...what 6x9's you running?....the JBL's woofer and tweeter are superb and when hooked up to an amp yuo shouldnt get any dronong out at all, for front speakers, try along the lines of MTX, JBL, blaunkput etc.

O and try ebay;)

hmmm... well i want to try and keep the whole system pioneer (yes i know many people think that its a s***house brand but i like them!!) and the other thing is that i am not looking to amp the front speakers. i have seen those yellow coned splits by pioneer for $290 on ebay, but thats more than i want to pay (and yes i know im a tight ***) do you know of any pioneer splits that dont need an amp to run?

lol!!! dont spend $290 on ANY speaker if its just going to be run off the HU cause there all going to sound terrible at some stage,
you dont NEED an amp to run ANY speakers, its all a matter of choice, but seeing as you can proabbly fork out $250? for a pair, why not get a small 2 channel amp (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/RESPONSE-1-X-200W-2-X-80W-RMS-AMPLIFIER_W0QQitemZ5858530909QQcategoryZ4950QQrdZ1 QQcmdZViewItem)
which will set you back about $170, and with say another $100 hunt down a pair of resonable cheap 2nd hand splits, this will CRAP on really good pioneers running off a HU

i wouldnt spend over $70 on speakers just running off a HU...

yeah, i suppose i would go for some normal speakers for the front, now what size fits perfectly into the doors 6" or 6.5"? and whats your opinion on going for a 4 way speaker in the door?

4 way? as in coax? eh...2-3 way will be fine
6-6.5" will be fine for the doors, just screw them into the door card, there freeken hard as, the speaker wont move at all.

i got my clarion SRS 1625 splits half price, just outta the blue......so listen to some, and wait until they come down in price and you'll be laughing.

but mate definatly consider spending $350 MAX to get a basic set of splits, amplifier, and wiring kit, and you will be in heaven:D

6" fit easier. 4-way, hmmm ok i guess if you're running off the hu, splits will still give better sound though. I'm not sure if pioneer make blue cone splits, but if you're just going off the HU, try some BOSS audio blue cone splits. They'll set you back about $70-80. Not the greatest speaker, but will go quite alright off the HU.

Just look above, they're identical to what you posted (maybe they're 3-way?)
They're 220w max i think. Cost me $100 or so.

I have to disagree with some of you guys. while i definately recommend an amp for the front splits, decent speakers will still sound heaps better than crap speakers, whether they are amped or not.

It is definately worth choosing your spakers wisely though as some need more power than others. for instance, my Morels seem to soak up heaps of power, but I had some entry level DLS splits in my old car that went pretty well off the HU (the morels would be sh*te off the HU).

Also, amp or not I think splits are a good idea, just for the mounting options.

However, i am by no means suggesting that you dont get an amp. It will all sound heaps better with an amp. maybe get some OK splits now and get and amp when you can afford it. Dont just get crappy coaxials.

Sorry to go against the grain guys.

To a degree, yes.
But if he has no intention of amping his speakers, a brand like boss, pioneer, sony would be enough. The cost of good speakers would outweigh the benefit of having them.

fats
23-06-2006, 01:33 PM
yeah definately. I am not suggesting boston pro or morel elates. I think the pioneers would be fine, but I would definately lean towards the entry splits or at least mid spec coax. I would steer well clear of the boss speakers though.

Since you like pioneer then try that, but I would suggest lloking at JBL, and clarion too. You might even be able to afford entry splits in some pretty good brands. Have a look at the cheapest DLS splits and even rainbow have some cheap ones I think.

Those MTXs look like they'd fit beautifully into the 2nd gen door trims.

I put mine in the dash, well actually i have a dash matt to keep my mum happy so i figured i'd screw the tweeter into the 4"speaker grille on the dash, sound great....

O BTW paul a good set of splits dont need to be amped to **** on cheap speakers amped...My mate has 2 6x9's and 2 6" pioneer coaxials running off an amp and my 2 unamped 6.5" cadence splits **** all over them. got my speakers for $250 from greg on here and they are bloody awesome. Highly recomend them. BTW i would take a pic of them but my cameras dead atm.

yeah but compare the brands, pioneer to cadence......
mounting options for the tweeter, well, depends how much mucking around you wanan do, easiet from memory would be
door trim;
4" speaker hole
if you wanna put more effort into the position, try fibreglass mounts on the mirror cover thing (where the 3rd gen ones sit) or even on the a pillar

Hahahah!! You serious?
That's pov!
Even my pov pack 91 TR with no door inserts had elec windows.
Anyway that a pillar mount is a good idea for everyday listening :). Just make sure it aims towards the over occupant, like the drivers side is aimed at the passenger and vice versa.

What about Hertz ESK 165's? I got some for the girlfriends car and they sound great even off headunit power. She is very picky as she has had to listen to my Boston splits for some time now and she loves hers. Cost is around $150 including xovers and grills.

I would suggest mounting the tweeter in the kicks for better staging. :D

you dont mind Hertz gear do you Mr Ch@risma:D .

In all seriousness though, those are probably worth a listen if you can move away from pioneer.

Also look at the focal 165v1's. When I was first looking around I heard these running off a HU and thought thay sounded pretty good.

why has no1 mentioned jaycar response splits?

$140. rated best split system under $600 by many many many car audio mags comps etc

yeah I have to agree, that was a fairly large oversight. Jaycar splits are definately worth looking at.

They are not the magic speakers that some make them out to be though (IMO).

Where did you get the 6800MP from, they're an excellent head unit :) The 6800MP is an American model, slight differences including (from what I've heard) the AM radio not working as they don't have the option to change the stepping and theirs is 10KHz and not 9. Although AM radio isn't the point! lol

I have a 3850MPH, the 'H' signifying a Singapore/Malaysia/etc. model, the main difference is the front panel is silver and the text is black with an EL blue background. So the electronics would be the same, just a different panel for local tastes.

The 50 signifies the model for Australia/Singapore/Malaysia/NZ etc, slightly different electronics to the 00 models I believe, but nothing too major.

Its true the in-dash speakers are crap

But... what you cut in to was the front venting system, when you put the front demister on (the vents on the dashboard) at least you'll have nice air cooled speakers :D

I got 2 sets of speakers off Ebay, here's the link to one (from the same seller, he's reliable)!

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/NEW-ROCKWOOD-XPLORE-6-x-9-SPEAKER-4-WAY-COAXIAL-1000W_W0QQitemZ9744104634QQihZ008QQcategoryZ3292QQ ssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I actually bought one set and was so impressed with them I got another set. I bought a pair of Pioneer speakers before from Strathfield (when they were on special) and I was not at all happy with them. The Rockwoods beat the $120 Pioneer's any day! (I think there were like $190 normal price). I paid $80 all up for the Rockwoods, I couldn't believe just how much better they were... and cheaper!

I use them as the subwoofers in the back, and put the second pair I bought in the front doors. I have a Pioneer 3850MPH, which like the other models like this and higher allows you to run the back speakers as subwoofers. THIS is different to just setting the back speakers to a lowpass filter of 250, which you can do with the head unit on.

You have to turn the head unit off, press the Audio& power buttons which get you into the setup where you can set the time, radio frequency stepping etc. Through here you can set the rear speakers to S/W (subwoofer) or FUL (full range). You can then turn the head unit back on and then set the frequency cut off for the subwoofer, as if you're running a subwoofer through an external amp. :D
