View Full Version : What signal does the remote terminal look for?

Hey guys, i'm toying with the idea of installing a couple of speakers in my boot, but i only want them to come on when the boot is opened. Would it be as simple as hooking up the boot light cable to the remote terminal on a crappy amp (or even to the power terminal, talking like 200w max at most). Would the amp see the boot light power signal as an "on" signal, or would the 12v be too much for it? I would have thought the headunit would just supply a tiny amount of 12v current through the remote wire to activate the amps. What do you guys reckon?
Reason i wish to do this is,i have 2 6x9 boxes i'm not using, plus 2 6x9's i'm not using, and i hate opening up my boot to show people my subs and all you can hear is bass, i want to be able to hear what the song is as well.

Cheers :).

Yes, the amp will work with a 12V signal....something like 0.5mA or something tiny like that will work..

Only problem with you using your boot light is that the amp will be on 24/7!! lol You boot light is switched via the ground wire. What you can do though, is just wire up a simple 12V relay and you'll be right.

Doesn't the signal need to be grounded before the amp will recognise it?
lol i never thought of installing a switch, i could then even turn the in car sound off while the outcar speakers are turned on to get rid of background noise.....hmmmmm .

The 12V that your boot light uses is constant...as in wired directly to the battery. The second you put that into the remote terminal on your amp, it will switch on, coz you're amp is grounded....(it is isn't it? lol) If you have a switch there, kinda defeats the purpose of it switching on 'automatically' doesn't it?

*cough* relay :P

EDIT:...wtf, where did Sharkie's reply go? I've been smoking too much weed, arrghh!

Ah yeh of course amp is grounded. How would a relay be wired up?
lol yeh i saw sharkies post (reply with switch statement), maybe i'm out of it as well haha.

i wasn't sure but but if the amp is gounded you only need a switch for the amp remote and that will work sweet as pie. :)

OK big boy....

Now, I'm pretty sure those pin numbers are correct in what they're supposed to do (been quite a while since i looked up 'relays') You can simply google 12v relay or horn relay or whatever to confirm.

Go get a horn relay from Jaycar, PenisSmith Electrics, Autobarn, SuperShit etc etc and wire it up as my sexy diagram says so.

Just get any 12V switching relay. I made some for Alan and Rav for their amps. Basically the cooling fans turn on whenever the amps are on.
