I got 260kms off 50l of petrol in my Auto TR (2.6)!!
So what do i do? From what i gathered...
1. Slap in new sparkplugs+leads
2. Toss in some fuel injector cleaner
3. Change the O2 sensor
4. Clean the throttle body
What do you reckon is the 1st thing I should try? Sparkplugs first? Or should i do everything at one shot?
Note: I've also just changed the thermostat....also did a major service with the mechanic - he said "everything seems good!".
Oh and on a sidenote: I drive conservatively (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36931), tyres are fully inflated, engine well oil blah
Cheers

do a complete service, do the leads aswell.
TB is a good one, that should help, and also replace the fuel filter.
IF that yeilds no basic improvemtn get a diagnostic check done.....definatly runa bottles of injector cleaner through it though

the temp sensor for the computer can also cause that. Usually runs a bit sick too.Tthe car thinks the engine is cold and runs really rich to warm itself up.:D

Forget injector cleaner additives, get them ultrasonically cleaned. Thats the only way to ensure they're really clean.

Hmm just went to autobarn to look for an O2 sensor...they didn't know which one is used on magnas.....
How do i choose an O2 sensor?

which temperature sensor is that? I can only find "Coolant temperature sensor" and "air temperature sensor" in my gregory's?

hmmm...leads could have been a problem....i just switched to some top gun leads, and noticed that the distributor ends of the old leads were bent fairly out of shape...
BTW how do you tell if you've installed the leads properly? the engine starts fine so far....
and the TB was spick and span clean. Darn! was mentally gearing up for a session of satisfying crud brushing!

You should only change one at a time so you've got the right ones in the right place, but if the car is running fine and there's no problems then you've got it right. :)

Look between your throttle body and the filter box.
You'll see something with wires going to it, this contains the temp sensor and the mass air flow meter (MAF)
Also inside their is a hony comb structure that is use to stabalize the air so the MAF can sense how much air is flowing into the engine. If the honeycomb structure has become bent it will cause the MAF to read incorrectly.
Also a dodgy MAF or Temp sensor will cause shocking things to happen to your air/fuel ratios.
PS. People put to much emphasis on leads, if your lead was buggered, you would be running on one less cylinder and you would notice the grannys passing you with their walking sticks and the car rolling back down hills while trying to climb :p
Unless you got a rat sucked into your TB, cleaning it out wont make a huge difference on fuel economy.
If your economy is that bad it would have to be one of the below.
My moneys on either O2/MAF/TEMP sensor being buggered, or your injectors fouled up.

*flips his gregory's* isn't that the ...erm...."air flow temperature sensor" or somthing like that?
How much would that cost to replace?

Just ran a tank through my TR 2.6 Auto (injector clean in 5 weeks (have the dosh then)). $74 to fill it, BP regular, 300km. Fuel light is solid on (fill it up in morning). That was with O/D off most of the time, some city some freeway driving, A/T mode OFF, and me driving like the car was being driven by my dead grandfather.
Im Dreaming of a cleaaannnnn Injectoooorrrrrr!!!!!!

The temp gauge sender is on the top of the inlet manifold on the passengers side. The computers temp sender is hidden on the bottom of the inlet manifold under where the gauge one is.
You put a multimeter across the 2 terminals.
It should read about 2 - 3K ohms or 2000 - 3000 ohms at 25 degrees (engine cold)
Once warmed up it should be about 300 ohms.
If its out by miles its dead.

are you talking about the air inlet manifold? Isn't that on the driver's side???
