View Full Version : Cutting up a cig lighter adaptor
OK.
So a while ago, i got rid of my cigerette lighter (i d/c it, and left the wires out the back). Anyway, now i have something that needs a cigarette lighter to charge.
Has anyone ever cut up a cigarette lighter (the bit connected to your device that needs charging), and would i simply be able to cut up the adapator and connect the bare wires together? Or is tehre some kinda fuse/inverter thingie in the adaptor that will blow up my device if i bypass it?
What might be easier, is if there is a device that turns a cig lighter adaptor into raw + and - wires so i can hook it up to a 12v?
Hope that made sense... thanks in advance.

You should have no problems just connecting the bare wires, it would be wise to solder them and then put some tape/heatshrink around each but if you don't have a soldering iron you could just twist them together and then insulate them like described above.
Inside the ciggy plug (of the thing you are trying to plug in) there should be two wires, one leading to the bottom of the plug and the other leading to the side of the plug, the positive wire is the one leading to the bottom of the plug and the negative will be the other wire.
Now it is advised that you disconnect the negative terminal of you battery before you do any electrical work on the car, this way you wont blow any fuses. Now just simply join the wires like I described above... You don't have to remove the negative terminal if you are confident in your work....

thanks mate, was exactly what i wanted cleared up. Didnt want to break the plastic on the adpator (which would bugger it for later use) if i didnt have to.

Just be careful, some adapters do contain more than just wires (some a fuse etc. depends on what it is.).
