You guys talk alot about "pushing the car hard" - so how hard is too hard?

When i take off i try to only rev to 1.5 (at most 2)k...is that considered "grandmothery"? Or is that normal?

In a TR, grandmothery :P.
Normal i'd say 2-2.5/3k. Pushing it is 4-5.5k constantly.

yeah what he said

i usually change at about 2.5/3

i would normyl change gear around the 2500-3000 mark i think i think.

as for pushing it to hard, hitting the rev limit that sounds fair hard. i can't see anything bad with giving the car a rev, just not all the time and hard gear changes

Changing at 1.5k seems abit low doesn't it? My TR has no power unless i change at 2-2.5k at least.

not when petrol is 1.40/l! I'm a uni student - i'll do anything to save a buck! :P

Pushing hard = Changing just before redline each gear, so say about 6800-7000rpm.

Going back a number of years......In my KS (V6) auto, I found that the car would shift gears around 1800rpm under normal/light throttle, which is how I would normally drive. I got up to 570km per tankful.

In the 3rd gens however, the autos seem to rev out to about 2600rpm even under light acceleration. However in my new 380 which I have had for about 6 weeks, I don't think I've even touched 2000rpm because it gets along well, has good torque, and just cruises along effortlessly.

Hoping that the 380 starts running-in soon and reduces its drinking habit though

i baby my car now with petrol almost as much as gold....

usually trying to keep it as low as possible....about 1500rpms. but i still give a squirt every now and again...just to hear the exhaust growl a bit :) driving like this gets 400km per tank.

i would say that "pushing it" would be close to or at red line..so about 4000-6000rpms. but thats me i guess lol

I usually do 2000-2500 but recently it's been 3000-4000 depends on the speed limit I spose.

oi... my Grandmother used to always rev to 5000+.

She changed up by ear - trouble was, she's quite deaf. lol

Her alternator/compressor/belts usually only lasted 6 mths max.

The redline on ur rev counter is an indicator, it means start thinking about changing gear soon.

The limiter is ur engine screaming, now you ****wit, change me now!

wow i push my manual TS hard everyday and have for the past 6 months at least over rev it twice a week just for fun, occasionally get lil flames out the back but these cars really do stand up to it. my mum has had her V6 auto TR for like 7 years been flogged everyday 320,000k's on the clock only problems its had are valve stem seals and the water pump

how are flames caused? by un-burnt fuel in the exhaust??

My magna reguarley see's 4-5k before I change gears and it dosn't have any problem getting there (although theres not much past 5k unfortunately). I havn't driven a 2.6 but the V6 likes to rev out a bt.

I should prolly stop thrashing her so much but its that damn 45min in peak hour traffic to and from work. Drives ya insane sometimes. Thats the only thing i miss about my old job, 20min walk and i was there never had to drive.

Yes it would be hard to photograph flames. Would you take it the wrong way if I asked "Could you try and take some pictures of the flames?" Pretty please?

Yeah It'd have to be running pretty rich to get flames out of the exhaust. With unburnt hydocarbons burning in the exhaust.

So if you are getting flames out of your exhaust then something IS wrong with your car and your cat converter would be F**ked.

you know what annoys me... when you pull up at the lights next to the most over the top done up lancer ever that is revving the guts outa it off the lights, and when i take off at my normal launch off the lights which is inda hard but not flogging it and off the mark without really even trying i flog them and then cos they get beaten off the mark they speed past 60 and fly past thinkin they are hell good. i say a race off the lights is all in the launch and if you speed you are a loser, its all about how fast you can go without gettin booked

normal driving i shift between 2500 - 3000RPM.
and if i'm driving hard i'll push it to about 5000RPM.

it tops out at about 5500 and won't rev any harder, so there isn't any point going much past 5000RPM.

i take it pretty easy until the engine warms up though, i avoid going over 3000RPM until it's warmed up.

Before ripping on the bloke, I know that flames are possible from a 2.6l astron motor.. have seen it many a times. And with a straight through exhaust it is entirely possible as well. At speedway I know of a few sigmas that do this when being full revved then dropin right off the gas as entering the corners (probely due to over rich and exhausts being straight through with only one muffler and exiting to side of vechile just passed drivers seat).

So he may well not be bull****ting, although on a standard engine (these were obviously some work done to carby astrons) I believe it would still be possible with a straight through exhaust.

on my sohc ive never needed to go near the redline as the 12v stop breathing well before it and it's just faster to change earlier... see how the dohc goes...

Yeah jared's 180 blows flames apparently... just rich mixture getting through combustion when dropping rpm rapidly; my thinking would tell me computer saying needs this much fuel then clutch goes in; hot exhaust = flames...

yeah what he said

i usually change at about 2.5/3

yeah thats when i change when accelerating... but when i get to the right speed i normally put it up a gear so the revs sit around 1500 2000rpms... i have found theres no point going over 4.5/5 as theres nothing more than a screaming engine over that...
