howdy,

my mates turbo car decided today to start pissing out smoke. after he stopped there was heaps of oil in the exhaust. The car was making all the right noises and still making boost while this happened. Its a newish car with a new turbo install done.

any ideas what could of cause this for him? he's rather annoyed cause he has poured a fair bit of cash into it and this has happened.

Yeah, sounds like something in the center housing might have shat...... causing oil to leak into the exhaust housing. Could also be leaking oil into the compressor which would mean he's pushing oil thru the intercooler, BOV and eventually thru the engine.

Although don't consider my opinion to be "expert" just cause I've got a photo of two turbos on my kitchen table in my avatar..... I'm pretty new at this. Like Blake said..... could be heaps of things.

similar thing happend to my cousins 91 celica GT4 turbo. blowing alot of smoke but didnt notice oil in exhaust. his problem was his oil return line had a kink in it and one of the spark splugs was gone. changed those to and the problem was solved.

how long ago did your mate do the turbo conversion?

today was like the 3rd time his driven it since he threw on all the new stuff. He rang me this arvo pretty upset so hopefully it might be something minor and can be fixed tomorrow

wat does the smoke smell like? burning oil or very rich? when he turns his car off does he get oil on the floor?

Turbine end seal leak, most likely due to a build up of carbonised oil around the bearing housing oil dump area. If it's gone bad enough the turbine end piston ring might be missing completely.
Bad news is, it'll need a rebuild at least, a seal repair on the turbine wheel if he's lucky and a new turbine wheel if he's not, it'll also most likely require a seal repair on the bearing housing.

Unless it's a cartridge type turbo, then it's a new core which will be over 1k :(

Does he have lots of oil in the crossover pipe going to the intercooler/intake manifold ? if so then it could be like ashneel said, a kinked/blocked oil drain pipe, causing the turbo to see engine oil pressure, hence the oil pissing out both seals.

Matthius

Edit: just read it was off an 05 sti, it's most likely a BB turbo then, which will mean a new core is required, or he'll have to chase up another second hand jobby.

Jase how old is the car cause if it's getting on then it could be the valve seats. But does sound like the turbo's on her way out
