Hey Guys,
I have just recently made the move from Adelaide to Melbourne due to a promotion at work. I was parked at my workplace (The Jam Factory complex) all day and when it came to home time i noticed both locks from the drivers side and passengers side had been knocked out and a big fat hole where my Pioneer CD/MP3 player used to sit.
After calling my insurance agent (SGIC) they informed me that my locks and damage to the handles were covered but probably not my head unit! Anyway, my excess is $400, are the 2 handles and locks worth this much?? Has anyone else had to replace their locks in their TJ Magna? If so, how much am i looking at?
Thanks Guys,
Steve
from what i have seen i would say its a few $$ to get them fixed, seen it twice. you need the ned locks to fit the old key, or other wise you end up with 2 keys and that would suck.

The actual handles are worth $15 each.. You MIGHT find that they put a screwdriver into the lock and smashed it out which may not have damaged the lock itself..
Pull the door trims off and inspect the locks. If they look ok and you can still get your key in and turn it then all you need is the handles which are cheap

When's the last time you used the key in the door?
If like me 'never', why not buy the TL/TW handle and lose the keyhole.
That'll confuse them the next time they come looking... lol
(assuming you've got no choice but to park there again; jeez, was there Tues meself)

Didn't the alarm go off when they opened the doors? And i guess you didn't remove the face of the HU when not in the car?

Yeah I left the face on the HU which was a pretty s2pid thing to do. The only time i have ever left it on and i got punished for it!! I'm guessing the alarm didn't go off seeing that it was in a well populated area of the car park. I've already put the standard CD player back in, might stick with that til i can afford a "real" alarm.
This is what Mitsubishi are qouting me;
2 x Door Handles @ $30 each.
2 x Locking mechanisms @ $175 each.
2 x Hours labour @ $82 an hour
So thats about $574 plus i need a lock smith to match all the locks/keys up.
Surely it can be done cheaper!!

The alarm probably did go off but no one bothered to do anything because it's easier to mind your own business.
Happened to my mates car a few years back. Parked at work which was also a busy customer carpark, alarm went off however the thieves still managed to steel the HU, rear speakers, sub and amp.

The alarm would have gone off. Just wondering why it wasn't still going when you returned to the car. Do the stock alarms that come with magna's turn off after a while??

When my alarm system in my TR stuffed up, i had the bonnet open trying to disarm it, was going off at least 10-20 mins, with me looking so dodgy going under the dash playing with wires, fiddling with **** in the engine bay. This was in the middle of a busy shopping centre car park. We were approached by not ONE person. One guy looked at us like "wtf are you doing" then just walked off.

In the TJ's the alarms turns itself off after about 30 seconds.

If its any help, you are more likely to get your car flogged in SA than anywhere else. Just moved from Adelaide to Sydney, my premiums have gone up 60%, even thought car theft is lower than in Adelaide. It really sucks though. Change over your insurance soon though. I was able to keep my savings and loans insurance through CGU, cheaper than any quote I could get over here, and I didn't loose my no claim bonus. SGIC is Allianz, but not sure if you can just swap over. Some wankers tried to steal my headunit out of my sigma on Hackney road, but strathfield did such a dodgy job installing it, they couldn't get it out! Nearly broke my dash!

Would it be possible to put the rear door handles on the front doors? You could just use your remote to get in the car. The only possible problem being that if you lose you remote then your stuffed!
Has anyone tried something similar?

Or safer to hope the owner has insurance than worry about being stabbed or shot if you approach them. By the time rent-a-cops or police turn-up to a car alarm going off, the thieves are long gone.

your lucky thats all they did, i installed a new stereo in my TE, not a week later some one broke in and stole it and the stacker in the boot, they poped out the lock on the passengers side, bent the skin on the door, keyed the car, smashed the dashboard, cut EVERY wire in the dash, smashed the steering column and stole my mars bar that was on the passengers seat. Bastards!,
total damage - $4200.

If you have keyless entry replace the front door handles with a set of rear ones, no keyholes for people to tamper with

ok, try this one lol
what happens if your car decides to recode itself.. mine did that constantly when the battery was dying.
The alarm system scrambled itself and mitsubishi had to reprogramme everything including the remotes.

But then wouldn't the key be useless anyway :P.

no, the key still works. just the remote, alarm and keyless entry was playing up.
it didn't affect the immobiliser because my car could still start up aswell (thank god).
anyway what i'm trying to get at is to fork out the cash and replace the locks because remotes/alarms are computers.... and we all know how realiable computers can be!! :P
There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to get inside your car.
