View Full Version : Got a custom Muffler/Exhaust? Post a sound clip

Im sure some of you have noticed how difficult it is to get an acurate idea of what sort of sound to expect from your car, some say 'oh muffler X sounds really good' while others go 'no muffler X is too loud/quiet, use muffler Y' etc etc.

So I thought it would be a good idea if everyone with a non stock exhaust system, record a sound file and post it up, hopefully developing a library of sounds for most of the common options. Its really quite simple, ive done it tonight. Used a laptop and a cheap set of headphones with a boom mic. Download Audacity (its free and small), plug a mic into your laptop (or any other recording device you wish to use) and go for a drive. You can upload the files to Putfile, im doing it as I type and will edit this post with the sounds as they upload.

Setup: AL4-5597 Lukey
Comments: Too quiet for my likeing. Better than stock but
Sounds: (Note: All sounds were recorded with the drivers side window Down)

Startup: http://media.putfile.com/Startup-40

20km/h Merge accel to 100km/h in 2nd/3rd: http://media.putfile.com/20-100-merge-2nd3rd-gear

Accelerating: http://media.putfile.com/Accelerating-60

lol. i can hear more crackling of whatever it is, then the exhaust.

Hence you can gather from that that its rather quiet. The idea is not to have a 'mine sounds better than yours' competition but to try get as many different sounds as possible so people can make informed purchases.

This was taken the day the car started running with the conversion. It actually sounds a lot better now, I dont know why, I guess everything "settled in"

Plus I wasnt going too high in the RPM to get that banshee sound that it likes to get...ask AussieMagna Blake about that lol

True, Tunnel sounds are awesome.
I agree that getting a good recording is a bit hard, but we arent after a masterpiece here, just an example. I think the problem I had is that because the exhaust IS quiet, any other sounds come out alot louder. I might try getting the laptop to record then putting it in my boot

heres a real dodgy video i took on a cruise 3 years ago! my car was still auto, and had a single cannon muffler with a dump pipe, just posted this to show how much it drones inside, but screams when revving!

You mean the 2nd one or the first one? The 2nd one is with my custom ground cams that have lots of lift and very long duration, which is why it gets that whole lumpy idle sound to it. You should hear it at WOT

I'll have to try and get a recording.

The first recording is the RPW Stage 1 cams. I think it's mostly the 3" exhaust and muffler that gives it that note, but some of it will be the extra power from the cams.

How much are the cams from the 2nd recording.

I love that note it has, ive got a 2.5" system from cat back and 2 sports mufflers.

$1100 for the cams, you'll also need to spend $260 on cam gears, and $340 on valve springs, so you'll probably need to take the heads off to fit it all which is $300 in gaskets alone. Then the labor to do it all :cry: - I try not to think about how much it all cost :bowrofl:

God dammit, Sooooo many things to do, so little money to do it with.

I needa win the lotto.

Sounds very tuff tho.

Maybe i should just change the 2.5" for a 3" and get hi flow cat aswell.

It's actually very smooth anywhere away from idle. And with the idle as fast as it is it's quite smooth to sit in despite the sound. It roars like a beast over 3000rpm though. I will record it over the weekend for fun.

You would need a aftermarket ECU also to make use of all this which could also be up to $1500 :(

Run the video file through Vdub or something and re-encode it to a low grade xvid pass. Afterall you only mainly want audio, not video.

To get the best recording you should drive through a tunnel.

And i may even try it here. like the tunnel at mascot or harbour tunnel. One thing i do know is that it is ****in loud when i'm in tunnels.

Well hopefully today im getting an X-Force put on with new 2.5" piping to the cat. I had one last shot at getting some audio of my Lukey, this time I just sat the mic down behind the car and revved it. I think the problem is the mic doesn't capture mid-high range well at all. But Anyway, here it is

How loud is the Xforce? This sound clip was taken with the laptop like... 1m behind the car. Whole reason im getting the Xforce is because I don't find the Lukey loud enough.

EDIT:

Hehe, just got back from the shop. Xforce MP01 + piping to cat (lucky too, my old piping had several holes)

I need not have worried about it being louder...it is. By a fair bit too. But I like it that way, sounds pretty sik. Not for everyone though, I can see alot of family people finding it way too loud. Ill try get a recording later today or tomorrow

Mate might be a bit louder and you think it sounds sik well it does a little . But you can get rid of that fully sik hyundai excel rasp by placing in a resonator. About $150 bucks should se a nice one. Will give you slightly better launch and no rasp. Plus the tone will be slightly deeper and better. But let me say this it does and will always sound better with an after market job you just need to fine tune it a little. Yes i also have a rather loud exhaust and i even had no res for about three months until the "rasp" drove me nuts. So i put in a Stainless res but now i'm thinking about a second muffler just to tone it down a little maybe even "legal"
