View Full Version : 255/35/r20 on a magna?
(grr i just lost all my post... im going to be short now) .
Ive chewed thru my first set of rubber on my 20s in 2.5 mths.. yes.. woohoo. :doubt: Anyway, i have got the camber kit coming to hopefully cut down on the inside wear (just found the metal coming through everywhere on the inside few inches.. lucky just before a 16hr road trip).
Ive been quoted 350 for nakangs again (225/30/r20), 275 for kumho or hankook, and 300 for nittos. They are all for 225s and 245s.
However, i have the chance now to buy 255/35/r20 nankang ns2s for around 125ea! .. (they didnt fit with his suspension).
Now i had my guards rolled earlier, and the 20s went on with no probs, no scrubbing etc. Shes dumped damn low on coilovers (sorry i dont know the inches.. will attach a pic), and just had the fronts done futhur again yesterday to totally roll the lip of the guard up.. ..
I really have no idea if they will fit or not. .. and we only have the rubber, not on rims, so trying them on is really not possible. I think its the regular size for a 9" rim :\
Just want to know if anyone has tried this.. and if they will in fact fit. Im not to sure what problems would occur, but im thinking that the rubber might have a little overhang on the 8.5' wide rims, and might bang up into the guard lip.. but ths is eactly what i had rolled futhur to allow, but dontknow if it will help this cause?
Ta.
edit* sorry only one of the pics that shows how much the rims sit flush with the car... duno if this helps. apolgies for my spelling/grammar too. its late.

$275 for hankook? is that the k104? cos damn! thats cheaper than 19's?!?!! wtf?
as for your actual question.... it seems that the rubber u have now is stretched at the limit, so i would suggest going at least 235/30. that being said, i am not sure if 255/35 will fit as i think it may be too wide for your 8.5" rim.
pop into a tyre joint and ask them if 255 will fit on a 8.5" rim. from your pic, it looks like you can definately afford to go wider without the tyre coming out of the guards.

Wow 255/35/20... Thats massive. im telling you dee they will not be good. 245 are a very tight squeeze and so much bigger than 225 in rolling diameter.. are you sure they will get under the base of your stut towers.. i dont reckon they would.. there is a good differance between 225 and 245.. then another good change to 255.. You crazy biatch..:)

I have to say, HAHAHAHA. That'll learn you for having 20 inch rims, all worn out in 3 months, WTF were you doing? You'd probably do well to buy some DECENT tyres and not Nankang rubbish cause the same thing is gonna happen. Dunno about the size, sounds stupid. Personally i'd go for some 225's and try to find some good tyres.

Got a lot to do with the 4 degrees of camber on the rear, its visible from the pic even

When doing my brakes yesterday I found that I couldn't even fit my index finger between my 235's and the rear strut tower thingy. So who knows how 255's would fit.

The coilovers might help this....... they're alot more compact than the standard coils.
hrm. well ill pick them up, no harm.. if they dont fit ill try to pawn them off to someone else who might have better luck. Im getting a pair of 225s and 255s. Will let u know what happens.
Oh and its my fronts that have worn stupidly... the rears are still fine..
btw, just so i can visualise this...
the 255s will make the wheel... more chunky.. basically wider. Now bceause of the camber i have... it might fit.. but if were to fit camber kits it will result in pulling the bottom in with the pins/shims, however that would slightly fling the top out more wouldnt it (trying to make the wheel sit straighter)... .? But if the front was to fling out moreto the ouside.. that would give me less clearence wouldnt it? like it would be closer to banging into the guard lip?
btw... does the whileline camber kit from philcom... does that have both shims for rear, and bolts/pins for front.. he hasnt gotten back to me, and its teh weekend, and i want to fix this asap.

NO.. Magna Camber kits push the tops out..
give it another week or so and Kmac will have a kit that pulles the bottoms in, my car is another guinea pig..:P
255 are wider and they are also taller as in rolling Diameter.. There will be a big diff there..

how the firetruck have you chewed through a pair of tyres in such a short period of time? I've had my 20's for nearly a year and have about half my tread left! Do you slow down for round abouts or are they just a road challenge?
I've got Nitto's, they're pretty good

ah k, thanks for that. If it pushes the top out i might be in a bit of strife (at least with the fronts). WIth regards to kmac, i dropped them an email a couple of days ago, so hopefully they get back to me on monday.. are you a once off project and whats the dollars like (pm me if you like)?

i dont think its a case of crazy driving.. just a lot of driving full stop. that and perhaps my fast braking. I got a quote for $300 for nittos which may be an option for the next set (compared to the 350 nankangs).. shall see how we go, i pick up the 225s and 255s on monday.
The rears are fine though, and im pretty sure i can whack the 255s on there.. maaaaaaan... i duno. i just need all this done in the next day or two, but might be worthwhile to wait to hear from kmac before ordering from philcom.

not if you get a lower profile.... ie, 255/30 is lower than 255/40

on a point less note i have a 255/55 19 siting at home, only slightly worn
you think a 255/35 20 is big, you should see this 19 in the back of a commodore wagon (vn)
its like a drag tyre
can i ask if its safe (im pretty sure its not legal), but are there any real concerns with haveing 255/35 on rear and 225/30 on front?

225/30 is getting low.. 225/35 is what you need..

well, the car will look wierd cos ur rear tyres will have a higher profile than the fronts. as for legal, i think it is legal, as long as you have the same brand and the same spec tyre on the same 'axle'.

i dont think that 5% of 225 is really going to make that much of a difference tho...
crap i just wrote out like an essay of stuff.
Anyway, basically went down there this afternoon (after awaking to one of the fked tyres flat - and dee having never changed a tyre before, managed to pull it off, only to find the spare flat :doubt: ). Chose the call a friend option and got it filled and went down to the tyre place around4.
I didnt even attempt to fit the 255s on the front.. there was no chance, so we threw them on the rims and on the rear... hellllllll no. tried over 6mm of spacers, but it was being held up against the 'knob' (official term for the metal rod/pole arm that comes up and on the top of the wheel).
We pulled out some 245/35s put them next to eachother on the floor.. and ... sfa difference we felt?! Looked identical. Its a damn big piece of rubber. Althoug the 255s fit perfectly on the rim, it just wasnt going to work, too many spacers = bad and even though guards were rolled and may of accomadated them, that metal arm hanging over the top of the rubber was the problem.
since i got there late, it was home time, so heading back tomorrow to throw on some 245/30 and if not, they will pick up some 235s in the morning.
but yer, basically, your not going to fit 255/35/r20 on a magna.
pics below are of the damaged tyres. Was so lucky i didnt bust them coming home on the m4 doing 110km/h last night. Woke up this morning thought my regular 30 profile looked a little thinner than usual. But oh well, leart how to change the tyre :D
Oh, and why must everyone, upon seeing the metal hanging out of the tyre, insist on rubbing their hand along it... lol

255 probably will, they just dont fit on yours because of the offset of ur rims. but id definately suggest goin with the 245's.... much better for the grip and for the rims. I know for a fact that 245's fit. if they dont, then ur offset is ghey.....
oh and wow!! good old nankangs!! :bowrofl: :bowrofl:

if your hell bent on keeping the 20's, just go the trusty 225/35 R20's. They're worked for me for just under a year now. If your still having issues, you have coilovers for a reason. raise the car up to a level where you wont be destroying tyres.

yer, well hopefully :\ we put the 245/35 next to the 255s and they looked dead set identicle to all of us. Really hesitated putting them on the rim, but grabbing a pair in 30 profile to try on tomorrow.
im sure ego has them in 35s, but we'll see.. :doubt:

dont ever stand a mag like that otherwise timber! good bye face. whats the hammer and socket set for? lol
there really isnt that much rubber full stop, i think i was past the indicators on my trip home on the first day.. very different tyres ive had now, and i can really notice the difference in looks and feeling. really unimpressed with the nankangs. The outer-wear on the picture you chose was only the front right hand.. and the outer wear is basically due to the wheel boucning up into the guard lip (had the lip fixed and no more issues with that).
at least ive learnt a bucketload on how to maintain rims, (and how to change a tyre) :P
Oh, and the socket wrench kit was for an adapator (thanks Pete :P), to allow me to fit the wrench onto the wheel nuts. The hammer was to remove the wheel nut when it got stuck in the cheap adaptor on the wrench.. ahha.
Yer, if the rim dropped on the face it woudl suck, i didnt realise how heavy they were and droped the back of it about 5cm when i was putting it on the ground earlier :( . but all the inside lip is scratched to the max where i scrap on uneven levels under the car :o .
