I am intreguied as to what this pod box is, guessing it is some type of box for a pod filter...
Okay okay, I will do a search...

Ah what a clever idea!
Tell your mate I can put him onto the right people (family business) if he wants them to be cast up out of aluminium... Brass for that matter.... Come to think of it pretty much any metal or alloy....

metal might get hot?

Heat wouldn't be the biggest problem, it would be the weight and postage. I think ABS plastic is definately the best option.

not to mention putting heavy brass in your engine bay  how about something lighter....
....good to see somebody offering to do something instead of just leeching others work though, cheers....

Aluminium would work, Light and strong. I havn't seen under the hood of a 3rd gen but if it was a little bit away from the engine it could keep cool, especiaqlly with the inclusion of some heat syncs on the top and sides...
Plus the fact of air being drawn in through it constantly? it'd get real cold and help to keep the fresh air cold too.. and also get hot and help heat the air..
Mrmacomouto
27-06-2006, 04:17 PM
If the heat sync was on the outside flowing air through the engine bay it would remove the heat from the metal, and make sure the air inside was cool, would be a lot cheaper to, could probably knock them up for $20-30 once the mold is made...
If your mate wants me to knock up a prototype I could put the design into the engraving machine and cast a few up for him...
At a small charge of cource... Either that or I get to sell the prototypes...

So would these be cast or are they press bent. Cos I'm thinking cast isn't gonna be cheap. Bent sheeting could be alright, and I couldn't see heating being a major problem. I would think postage weight may be the killer.

Casting isn't to expensive when you do it yourself, dad has all the stuff out at his work shop...
The furnace is powered with sump oil so it costs **** all to run, all the aluminium would be melted down from old window frames and such... Quick run over with the belt sander and a dip in acid and they would look okay...

Alright that sounds cool :) Just out of interest, what do you use for the mould? Sand, silica??
Mrmacomouto
27-06-2006, 05:48 PM
I am not sure on the stuff, but it's a sand type stuff you just throw away after use...
There is heaps of different stuff out there though, some expensive chemical stuff you can reuse, and some really fine stuff for getting really high detail stuff.
I could cast 5 sides as all one piece, then the bottom of it as a bolt on piece so it would appear to be one unit.. But I would need dimensions and stuff...

Hmmm....you may be onto something here.
I am working on a prototype for this myself, and am working off another member's POD Box, and using ABS plastic (basically the same material the stock air box is made of). It seems to form well, and resist heat reasonably well, and also looks at home in the engine bay.
However i would be very interested to see how an aluminium version would look. If you do decide to have a shot at this, i can hook u up with dimensions etc if you'd like, or even get a copy of the template from Sky-Na's mate, and see what ya can do.
This idea has some potential.

i think i would prefer an ABS pod box. as it would most likely look more at home in the engine bay. and if a officer ever ask to look under the bonnet it looks stock...

I don't think there is anything wrong with your engine not looking stock, tell him if he wants to unbolt it just to find an air filter he can go for his life...
We could always anodize it black.... Or just paint it...

theres something about abs though, and if it doesnt look stock hes more likely to check other things...

i've got a pod.... used the existing filter box + hacked inner air filter to enclose my POD.... the engine side is totally enclosed but the right side is alittle exposed.....
looking front on, looks totally stock.....

Hidey ho!!!
Hey DaJaJa, I've been contemplating doing this for quite some time but didn't want to hack the original bits & pieces. I'll go to the local wreckers & cut up a 2nd-hand one. Would you be able to post a pic or 2 of how it looks & maybe how you went about doing it?

:stoopid:
actually this is giving me an idea - there could be potential to just modify or add-on to the stock air box to make an enclosure - potentially cheaper and more stock-looking.
Might grab one from a wrecker and see how we go - don;t wanna hack my own in case i wanna go back to stock at some stage.

Cheers for that, helps a lot - is that an additional pipe for CAI i see attached to the underside of the snorkel?
How do you find that helps if at all with the performance?
***NOTE : Not trying to start a debate with everyone on the forum about whether or not CAI works or not :D

not too sure......... dont think ive noticed anything yet...but i'd think cooler air would get to the pod.... did it on the weekend.... so i'll see how it goes....

From what I understand that would still be illegal because the pod is not enclosed, just sheilded... Would depend on the cop you get though.

Yeah your right. Its because its basically an oil soaked object in a hot engine bay and they are worried it would catch fire. It has to be totally inclosed.

If you were to have the headers/head (?) of that engine anadized red, along with an anodized red pod box that would look hot! You could even do the tacky clear water box done in red perspex or make it out of aluminium to!
Lucky 3rd gen owners!

yeah, i'm gonna look at this, and see if it wouldn't be better to just 'extend the stock box to effectively enclose the POD, without creating a brand new airbox.
Also, if CAI is required, then the stock airbox can still be used, either with the setup that Dejaja has used, or removing and replacing the snorkel.
BTW Mrmacomouto i'll send u those dimensions tonight if i can. :D Haven't forgotten.

Well with that thought, maybe someone could make just a new backpiece of the box as being exposed defeats the purpose. The original EZ pod box would be better as there isnt really sufficient clearance in the stock box.

yeah its still not finished yet fellas.... the right bit is exposed.... still got to figure how to enclose it...
the exposed bit need to be 'an easy access' area cos this is where i stick my hand in to connect to pod to the adapter.... soooo..... maybe some material and a couple of screws/magnets will be put there....
will do that when i can be bothered....lol
