Hi hoping someone has come across this before and knows whats happening?
There is a load tapping in my engine that distinctly increases/decreases its consistency with increase/decrease of rpm. At first I thought it was only when cold but im sure its always now.
Main questions I have other than what is it? are:
How much damage will I be doing by continuing to drive the car?
And any ideas on parts labour costs etc on whatever this could be?

Yeh sounds like hydraulic lifters, my dad drove with noisy lifters on his TF for 3 years, got abit noisier but that's about it. He just got it fixed for about $500 all up including a service and new brake pads.

Engine has 140 000kms on it.
Its noisy now very irritating.
Is it the sort of job a someone with a decent level of knowledge could do at home?
or are there special tools etc neccessary?
Thanks heaps for your help too.
Jim.

I'm not sure about how easy it is to do, i know you need to remove the head and pull some things apart on the engine, takes a good couple of hours for someone who know's what they're doing.

I got a mate that completed his mechanics apprenticeship then left the trade.
So has the knowledge but no workshop and limited equipment.
Debatiing whether to ask him or not. I dont want him to think he can then get stuck and my car off the road for a few days!

Ask him if he knows how to replace a hydraulic lifter, if he stares at you blankly or asks "What's that?" then i dont think he's the right man for the job :P.
