View Full Version : Smoke that is giving me the poopies.
Well I'm not sure what the hell this is so clear it up for me. My 93 TR V6 Man. blows minimal smoke while starting cold (overnight) which I think is pretty splended considering its done nearly 200,000K's (my TP has stuffed rings at 110) Anyway, after idling for a while it seems that there is an oil build up and when i take off, whoosh goes a nice fat puff of oily smoke. Now its not like idling at lights (or if it is, its not big enough to notice) but today whilst idling to get lunch for like 5 minutes give or take, I took off to go and I finally got the ****s and decided to post asking for help. I'd take it to my mechanics but A) I know they'd say its time for a rebuild and B) I don't have that kinda cash just burning a hole in my pocket.
Any ideas?? I know it can't be the rings because I'm idling and i'd be blowing that sorta smoke all the time, it seems to me that low revs cause it, like building up and as soon as i take off (like 2 thou rpm) i get the blast.. god i hope its cheap to fix! (as if)

Are you sure that it's oil smoke and not condensation? Cos I always have condensation coming out of the exhaust when I first start the old girl up on a cold morning. It's pretty common.

Sounds like valve stem seals.

Exact same thing happened to my TR.

Stem seals. From what i gauge they arent too expensive to get the parts, but its fitting them thats the problem, and you usually have to do/get other things at the same time.....

As far as i know this is not correct.
When the car is idling, the compression is low, so less stress on the rings. This enables the oil to build up. When you take off from the lights (RPM rises) you increase the amount of compression which in turn puts more stress on the rings and enables the oil to get past and be burnt.
....but i may be way off.

Could be both, but its one of the most common problems with the G672 engines and the 4cyl one whatever the hell that ones called.....
Mechanics can charge UP TO $500 to change them, or mitsu specialists can charge as low as $150....
ill get round to changing mine soon....sick of trying to spin the wheels and only seeing smoke come from the zorst:cry:

Bad rings will show up with a dry/wet compression test.
Had TN 200,056km with exact same problem - suspecting stem seals too.
Would oil up when any idling, would rev it to 6500rpm to blow the snot out.
Makes a great smokescreen! (= anti tailgating device)
Yeah well its like, idling for 5 mins that it builds up and i've also noticed on a steep hill idling it'll start to chuff some smoke too (like a 45 degree hill)

Try some Wynns stop leak or something like that, look for the one that says that it reconditions seals. It's supposed to soften the seal up, problem is that the seals get hard and let oil past. Worth a shot for less than $10. It seems to work reasonably well from my experience.
Yeah I'll give that a burl when i get paid, I really would rather find the problem and get it fixed rather than just splashing a bottle of crap in every service and just letting the problem slide until i have no choice when or how i get it fixed which kinda seems to always happen to me, I have a good run for a while then whammo something happens and i can't afford to spend so many thousand but i have to cause the car wont run without it etc, luckily enough last time when i had my TP a girl went through a give-way sign and wrote it off, otherwise i was going to have to get it reco'd, but i dont want to have to go through all that again :(

nah, get the Wynns Stop Smoke instead. :shifty:
Or next oil change go for the Helix 25W60 "Old Engine" formula or similar.

If its the valve stem seals it will be blowing smoke all the time, even when the engine has warmed up. Best way is to get someone to press the accelerator whilst you look at the exhaust, if it shoots ->>>>>>>>>> white smoke out means they will need replacing.
Get the them to press it whilst in park, dont go flying into a wall. This will tell you straight away.
Otherwise your car will blow smoke if cold, most do, until the engine warms up to the normal temp condition (on Magna's its half- the middle). The smoke will go away once it reaches that temp.
If it is your stem seals, ring around and get the best price! Try find a smaller mechanic workshops, not a franchise (mitsubishi, ultratune , middas etc).
FIND A PRIVATE ONE THE PRICE WILL BE ALOT BETTER!
that is all
Could an oil choice be my problem? I got a good deal on Mobil Super XHP.. and from memory its either 20w50 or 10w40 (leaning towards 20w50) and I used this last oil change and for top ups. I'm thinking it can't be because its TOO viscus because its only 20 when cold.. and I'd assume the thinner the oil the MORE likely it'd be to slip between seals etc? and the old formula is 25w60 so i'm not really that far away from it anyway.. The only smoke i get when i give it a stab is from being rich (black).. UGH!

Rich black smoke sounds more like fuel/air mixture.
Oil smoke is more often a bluish colour.
Rob
Yeah I know, I was just saying, when I stab it all I can see is black some at like 5000rpm however I get a grey/white smoke after idling for a while or on a steep hill
