Ive got a magnetic one on my tranny, was covered in grey mucky crap when i drained it last, so I can only assume it was doing its job.

My guess is that its supposed to attract the metal filings etc from your oil, but if you were getting metal filings in ur oil, id be a tad worried...

also, couldn't be bothered reading the story in the link - care to summarise??:D

"Magnetic sump plugs can often cause more problems than they solve, as they suffer from particle wash off, particularly in high vibration environments (which covers most fluid systems) and high velocity oil flows (which is why they are generally located in the centre of a large sump). When a magnetic plug suffers wash off things can really go seriously wrong in a very short space of time. Wash off occurs because of the rapidly decreasing magnetic field strength as we move away from the magnet as described above. As small debris is collected on the magnet it becomes magnetised and therefore coagulates into clumps. As and when these magnetic clumps are washed back into the oil flow they can home in on the most important parts of the given system, usually causing instant catastrophic failure"

"...small debris is collected on the magnet it becomes magnetised and therefore coagulates into clumps...."
hang on, "magnetised" ASSUMES that the debris is either iron/steel or cobalt

Your engine is mainly alloys, aluminium etc... not much magnetic iron in there really.

Hidey ho!!!

Yes, most of the engine is alloy / aluminium, but the parts that wear are iron / steel i.e. the rings, the pistons, valves, valve sleeves, etc. (I can't remember what the name of the collar that goes into the bore ). If these parts were alloy your engine wouldn't last very long.

There's a thread here somewhere with details about a magnetic sleeve that goes around the oil filter. BTW, that is the purpose of the oil filter: to catch debris in the oil.

Cya!!!

dont see the point in getting one , if you want it to catch metalic fragments you should be a bit concerned that they are there in the first place, but you need to way up any pros and cons of having it before you put it in

Mitsus engines in OZ have alloy head and cast iron blocks. Toyotas etc have an all alloy
engine but with cast iron bits here and there.

Apparently the magnetic sump plugs are a bad idea, but the magnets that go around the oil filter are a good idea. Here are two www addresses:

http://www.filtermag.com/

http://www.oneeyeindustries.com/domestic.asp

Here is a beaut guide on engine oils. Also by the same bloke are other guides on wheels and tyres, suspension and tyres, and brakes.

Enjoy!

Also: The carbibles link suggests putting magnets from computer hard drives on the sump. Magnets from computer hard drives are very strong. You just stick them on the outside. Another link from inside the page tells goes to a company selling magnets that wrap around the fuel filter. At least you can change the filter and throw away all the accumulated metal. Hopefully you change the oil regularly.

I am going to mix the two ideas and put the computer hard drive magets on the fuel filter. Anyone got a dud hard drive?
