My car has a rough idle, but its strange as it isnt constant. If you listen the car will rev and every so often, irregularly, its like one cylinder fires bigger than the rest, could the injector be sticking open? It inly revs a few rpm higher for a split sec (one cyl)

I was thinking it may be the head gasket, because when i got the car it had a busted thermostat as it was stuck open, and i thought as it could have been going hot then cold, the head gasket may be a little iffy?

Also the car had a stuffed PCV valve so therefore there is oil ALL THROUGH the intake, i mean the plenum chamber and all, maybe this could be the problem.

Also i think i have squeeky timing chains, im wondering if i should do them myslef in the next week or so, or look for a job (which shouldnt be too hard over the hols) to wait for a rebuild, because i have no idea what issues this car has, the previous owner was a perefect example of "Fixing it just enough so it runs"

Oh so you know it drinks no water, or oil and no mixing of the two.

Meph what state are you in.
The idle problem you have is common with the tn and p efi motors.
the timing chain would not squeak but rattle. The squeak quite often comes from a head shield on the front engine mount damper, this is common.

I suspect the idle problem is related to the distributor and affects all astron II engines EFI and carby. From my experience when the shaft becomes worn there is enough movement to allow the pick up reluctor to touch causing erratic coil triggering.

This is my Humble opinion and I have proved it in two different cars (both carby) but the same distributor is used in the EFI to my knowledge

the noise is hard to explain, you have to hear it, and sometimes it makes a noise, like a bird that goes tweeweweweweweweweweeeeeeeeeeeee. It makes a sqweeky rattly sound you can only really hear it when driving with the windows down near buildings (as to reflect the sounds).

also i was pulled out a spark plug and it had like black soot on it, and reading things says that it may be a rich mixture, so maybe my oxygen sensor is on the fritz making it run rich at low speeds?

Also found a crack in my exhaust manifold i dunno what this means, and if it could be affecting anything.

I do think that it may be the dizzy or the crank angle sensor that may be making the spark erradic.

Me cars just crap, the guy who had it before me should be shot multiple times.

Ok, The noise I am not sure of, would have to hear it forst.
The dist shaft theory is also spot on, although it mainly affects the older tm - P series.
The Crack in the exhaust manifold, congratulations, you have a Magna lol, yes it is so common I chalange you to find an uncracked one and the non efi ones incorperate the cat in them so are different.
check the dist shaft, may have play in it, if so get either a good replacement or get it fixed, the black plugs can be rich running, get the emissions tested before you draw any conclusions.
The crack, get it drilled and welded properly and it should not come back.

i was just gonna visit mr wreckers and replace the manifold, as for the dizzy i played with it a while ago and there was no play whatsoever (my mechanic can back me up on this)

Maybe the sensor gone a bit? oh i dunno. Im gonna do the manifold and timing chains first.

I have this CLACK CLACK CLACK sound when you let the clutch out without reving it, but is silent when you rev. First i thought it was part of the clutch, as it also CLACKs when you put the clutch in, but ive also heard it on bumps. So now im thinking engine mount, maybe ones come loose and its hitting the body/engine. Ill get back to you.

Excellent, sounds like you're on your way.

replaced the manifold and the car feels as if it has smoother and more powerful take offs, i love it, rought idles still present.

As for the CLACK CLACK noise, i found a loose bolt in the front engine mount, tightened it and the noise has seemed to have gone.

My cars on the up and up, i love the holidays.

Check the Water temp sensor for air pockets.

get the car up to temperature then slowly back out the sensor. this allows water and the air pocket to be pushed out by the systems pressure.

A temp sensor in a air pocket will change the sensors temp quickly and the ecu will then make andjustements to the fueling at idle. hance the eratic idle
