View Full Version : What to do with my TP?

Ok, i now have a job and hence i have money.
Its a strange and kinda stupid question and i know you'll all laugh and say im wasting my money.
i do beat nissan exas in my magna's current (rooted) state so i figure its not too far feched :P
Do you think i could make a manual tp magna into a fun track car for about $2-4k?
I figure much more than that and i may aswell buy a new car, but id rather like to own a fast old magna for the humiliation value!
What should i spend the money on? (note that all labor would be done be me and a mate)
I figure $1.5k ish on an engine rebuild (me doing all except machining), mild cam, sigma rockers, extractors, balanced and strengthend conrods, exhaust, balance shaft removal and 9.0:1 pistons.
$1500ish on koni adjustable dampers, lowered springs, new bushes and a rear sway bar
and the rest on the stickyest tyres i can afford.
I know that a new car would be best in terms of having a sophistcated, good road car, but all i want is a fun track car, and i feel like if i get a new car i will still need to spend $2k on race-preping it... (and i must admit i do love my old magna)
Or any ideas for a good track car for about $4k all up? (thoughts include Ae82 corolla twin cam, Datsun 240z, Mitsubishi Scorpion, 80s Celica)
Edit: No need anymore, have bought EFI Sigma GSR, see page 2 for pics!

Brakes?
Don't forget a Roll Cage & a good seat!!

Brakes? I don't need no stinkin' brakes! :P
No but really, its a hillclimb and i can't get the stockies to fade at all (in fact you only even apply them about 3 times in a run!) but i might just get some good pads in case i want to do a track day or something.
Roll cage is not mandatory, but i reckon its a bloody good idea.
And a seat, i didn't think of that, but its a great idea, i could nearly get thrown into the passengers seat before :D

A good rollcage will stiffen up the shell quite a bit... 1st gen shell is pretty floppy.
Have faded stock brakes before - then when I parked it in garage and turned lights off,
found the discs were still glowing red!! haha we must've drove the TN hard.
Might wanna take a look at the powersteering too... mine when used very quickly
(eg Slalom, or just catching a skid) the power assistance ran out of power.
Mine also had less camber than stock, helps turn in.
But it can't be easily adjusted without panel work or suspension mods.

buy one of those toyota superchargers, bolt it on, feed it into the throttle body. more air will need an aftermarket ECU so u can add heaps more fuel, maybe need larger fuel injectors, then get extractors going into a 2.5inch pipe all the way with a good muffler. get it dyno tuned for power and u will have a rocket. tuned properly 7psi boost will get around 50% more power.
then get stiffer shocks, and an anti sway bar, maybe some better brakes. :D

Pitty your not in Tas,
I have a lot of good near new parts from my GT for sale,
Eg slotted rotors with pads, king lows, monro shocks, heavy duty clutch, GT wheels and seats Fallken Tyres and a bigger cat, most of this stuff has had less than 7 months use.

Thanks guys :)
But dilema solved, im buying a sigma gsr tommorow.
$700, Magna 2.6l efi conversion, supra 5 speed, scorpion LSD, 100,000km old motor, adjustable suspension :D
Yay!
P.S how is 60kw atw for an efi astron?

Just got it home, thought $700 was too good to be true, but its not!
It looks Niiiice, white, factory bodykit, good paint, schmick interior.
Goes pretty well too, healthy engine, and corners very bloody hard, harder than anything ive driven (not much really, mostly little hatches)
supra 'box has a very short shifter and is heavy as all hell!
not sure re scorp diff, but it is an LSD cause i can spin both wheels half way up my hill on the way back to my house :D
Needs a little tlc though, new muffler etc.

sigmas dont normally have LSD, you can use a diff from a starion? but they are hard to find and usually cost around 800 bucks, or some people reckon you can modify a ford 9inch to do the job.
sigma's are good hey, even my 3 speed auto 2 litre 1980 sigma is fun to drive sidways:D

wast 60 stock? dunno what mine would do on a dyno

Righto, got a muffler on it and had a chance to give it a good thrash.
Its pretty damn quick, feels quite a bit more responsive and torquey than the magna ever did, and on my dirt roads it wheelspins a lot!
Makes great torque from 1200rpm up, but runs out of puff @ 4000rpm
Diff is wonderful, you can really nail it hard out of corners and even with the rears spinning get out smoothly.
Suspension is pretty good, not quite sure what it is but its nice and stiff.
Gearbox is pretty good but takes a real effort to get into gear, but great if you double-declutch it (my shoulder is still acheing from that bloody short shifter!)
All in all for $700 im very bloody happy!!
Oh, and i looked under the oil cap and noticed it has roller rockers too, cool!
Think i will do a bunch of trackdays/hillclimbs in it and then might set my mind to building a better track motor
Im thinking along these lines.
----------------------------
RPW Stage 2 cam (hopefully will give me a bit more past 4k)
RPW Cam gear and Valve Springs
Greddy E-manage (to make the above work)
Balence shaft elimination kit
new timing chain and oil pump (Fix those damn rattles!)
Plus i might see if i can improve the intake manifold with a little bit of grinder smoothing (worth a shot!)
And a nice set of slicks!

looking at that engine bay makes you wonder how much crap is actually crammed into modern engine ........nice pickup though.
