Done a search and cant find an answer.
Got the front chains replaced about a year ago and something else is rattling like hell.
Searches seem to point me in the direction of the counter balance shaft?
Is this adjustable to take up slack, and if not and if I need a "bypass kit" how much wud the all up cost be approx?
4cyl Astron motor with 220000 on the clock but doesn't burn or even use oil.
Tried heavier oil to no avail, motor in incredibly good condition for mileage, but have to consider if spending $ hundreds on curing a rattle, albeit a very loud one, is worth it??

is ur magna a tm-tp or tr-ts. because the tn-tp magnas need to adjust the timing chain and counter balance by hand but the tr-ts do it automatically.
now if ur chains were replaced 1 year ago , they shuol be still fine unless somthing not quiet right or u have done 100 000+ klms in the last year.
now when u got it done did u buy a timing chain kit or just the chains?
timing chain kit comes with everything bar the sprockets. eg chains, tentioners, gaskets etc etc. u get them for about $99 from ebay.
now if u think u need the counter balance elimination kit there also on ebay for $30 i think last time i looked. ringwood auto parts store on ebay check em out.

TS Magna and AFAIK it was the timing kit that was fitted ( I certainly paid for one) not just chains, but am not happy with the place that did it so who knows??
Took it back to him and he said the noise was coming from "deep inside" and wanted about $500 to fix but couldn't or wouldn't tell me what it was.
Asked him if it was not "prudent" to have done the bypass at the same time and he was jest evasive on the subject and then wanted to re-ring the motor even although there was nothing wrong with them.
Bit of a chancer methinks.
Got a day off tomorrow might jest go to my Mitsu dealer initially for a diagnosis and quote.

My TR has been rattleing for about 60,000km now, and was replaced 80,000km ago. so i had 20,000 no rattle km out of mine.
then, just last week, the rattle stopped. all rattles. even the lifters that had become noisy latley.
I've come to the conclusion that ive had a oil pump issue or a blocked gallery that has cleared and allowed full oil pressure to the hydrolic chain tenshioner and lifters!
has any one ever heard of anything like this?

Oil passages gotta be clear of gunk, worth flushing every oil change.
AstronII should pump up enough oil pressure to tension the chains within 2-3 secs
of startup, can usually hear the change in the rattle sound when that happens.

since when? My old TN's AstronII has hudarulic adjusters, don't need manual adjusts.

mine rattled till the revs got to 1500rpm then went quiet.
the lifters went quiet when hot (5-10 min)
and i havent done a oil change in ages (its very due)

yeah sounds like your oil passages are constricted with gunk,
AstronII likes clean oil otherwise its a heartattack waiting to happen.
I flushed + changed my oil & filter every 5000km since new.
My AstronII was in great shape until 200,056km... when the auto blew. lol

Time to change the oil pump for a TS type with the ratchet system plunger tensioner. The ratchet system keeps the tension on the chain and does not have to wait for the oil pressure to come up at start up. The balance chain adjustment is thru the port in the timing case. Undo the two small bolts on the cover ...inside you will see a small lever sticking out ....loosen the 10mm adjustment bolt...with the finger, push down until the lever stops...NOT TOO TIGHT.....re tighted the adjustment bolt, re fit cover and away you go....if that doesn't work...see the magna doctor ...or NEW ENGINE!
