Hiya

I just got off the highway, looked at my temperature guage (front demister was on at low fan speed) and went WHOA! It was almost to the red! About 4/5 of the way up! within the next 10 minutes however, it dropped quickly to 3/4 then eventually 1/2 way (within 15 minutes).

So I opened up my bonnet and heard a sizzling sound (as in "Sssssssssssssssssssssssss"), coming from somewhere around the ECI unit. Hmm:doubt: . Coolant levels were OK (based on the overflow bottle), and I checked the radiator about 1 week ago. I also just changed the termostat about 2 weeks ago.

Hmm....what could be up? Is the engine running hot, or is there something wrong with the guage (since the temperature dropped really fast).

SC

PS: 4 cyl TR Auto. And someone's advice to junk the car (he said "more problems will start popping up") may have been right

First mistake, you checked your coolant level based on the overflow bottle.
You checked the radiator a week ago so you thought you wouldnt have to check it again?
Open up the radiator cap and check, pour some coolant into it to make sure.

Thats the first thing you should do, then if your 100% sure there is coolant in their then you can start looking at other things.

yea was gonna check it tomorrow morning when the engine had cooled down a little bit (and when there's enough light to see!) :P didn't want to end up burning my face off

heh...well looks like the radiator is dry (After inspecting it this morning)

a few qns

1. How do I know how much radiator fluid/water to add? Do i have to mix separately in a bucket first then pour it in?

2. What on earth could drain the radiator within 2 weeks? I had the gasket, radiator cap, and overflow bottle tube changed, and coolant replaced 2 weeks ago...

Sorry, I'm not answering your questions but feel that after it getting that hot you should check the thermostat as part of your checking. Overheating often causes them to fail.

I just replaced it 2 weeks ago? could it fail again so fast?

Shouldn't theoretically. Have u checked all hoses including heater hoses? Can u smell coolant? If there was that hissing sound, that probably indicates a split hose.

If it has been cooked;Yes.

For leaks refill the radiator, run up to temperature and then look underneath for drops falling. Needs to be up to temperature with the cooling system full and run a while after you last had the radiator cap off so as to pressurize the system which should push the coolant out fast enough for you to see it and track it down.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

I have a TS V6. It has started to run very hot with the thermo fan running, even in cooler weather. I have changed the radiator coolant (which changed nothing). Could it be the thermostat? What else could it be?

^^^ Yeah prolly the thermostat. They're pretty cheap and easy to replace so try that.

:stoopid:
You should make up a mix in a bucket, and then add it. If you can't find it leaking externally then, :(. You may have a problem with the head/gasket. An easy way to check for this is to run the motor until hot with the radiator cap off, once hot, if you keep getting bubbles coming up after the thermostat has opened a few times then you will have problems with the head or head gasket.

edit: oooooh 1000th post :)

When mine was 'boiling' I replaced the thermostat and radiator cap. No temp problems since.

Oh, and out of interest would dumping about 1L of engine oil in (was getting a bit low) be any cause for engine temp to go down (say needle at 1/4 of the way up instead of 1/2 way that I'm used to)?

What, into the radiator? lol
Sorry.

Might help a bit, as less friction = less heat.

Yeah, into the radiator.

I got some headlight fluid in there too while I was at it. And some Windex. When I go for a drive my radiator now cleans my windscreen and lubricates my headlights!

I wonder if I should have put some CV grease in too? For the rear wheels?
