Hey guys,

just had my 4spd auto/tip gearbox rebuilt and i've ended up with a bit of a problem, just wondering if anyone else has encountered such a thing... here goes

the car idles as though i've got the air sensor unplugged (seriously rough), tho occationally i'll pull up at the lights and it's running smooth as the day i got it at the same rpm (this doesn't happen often tho)

also when driving round occationally the power output will drop suddenly for a few moments then pick back up again (this has never happened in open loop tho, flat out the car still goes like a dream) when i'm not accellerating with the throttle wide open, occationally the engine just feels as tho it's got almost no power, just splutters along (only happens blow 2500rpm), the odd thing bout this is if i then put the pedal all the way down....bang no problems and the car is off and away

i'm guessing this is something electrical, possibly to do with ignition timings being cut as would occur during a gear change tho it's happening whilly nilly and for extended periods of time, but it still doesn't explain why everything seems fine and dandy in open loop.....at least to my understanding......:nuts:

anyways i'm taking it back to the shop soon, just thought i'd check if there's some wire they've put in backwards and someone has had it happen to them, or something like that

thanks in advance!! :D

I had a similar problem with a 351 Cleveland many years ago. I tried to chase the intermittent fault. Auto electrician found it once set up on the test scope. Found it to be a brand new (though a dud !!!) spark plug. Posssibly check to see if its faulty before assuming a transmission.
An article written years ago in the Institute for Automotive Mechanical Engineers, mentioned that over 90 % of breakdowns in modern cars is electrical.

Engine-revs SURGING is the result of a fuel problem. (except injectors that are multi point. in this case it would be a misfire, unlikely)
A misfire is electrical. (except batchfire injection. harder to detect. unless it's complete failure, unlikely)
No power = check fuel pressure regulator/fuel pressure/coil/ht leads.
Misfire = sparkplugs/ht leads/ cap/coil/transistor.
I have replaced brand new bosch plugs for nkg to cure a misfire on a toyota camry 4 pot. The spark plug was faulty which took out the lead with it. Cant replace one lead, so a new set was purchased $115.. ouch
Pull the plugs, closely examin the colour of the plugs. The faulty plug/lead will be the darkest. Check the leads with an ohm meter. No continuinty or almost infinity in one off the leads will be the culprit.
It's not uncommon to have two faults at the same time as i did with the camry. Spark plugs, fpr. Stick some injector cleaner in the tank.
And some cold beer down yer throat...dont get em mixed up coz you'll be the one with the misfire.
