View Full Version : Changing water pump - 3L TR
Half done changing my water pump in my V6 3L TR Magna and I have gotten to removing alot of stuff and sorta am stuck now... I know I might have to remove the cam belts and the tensioner, but I really have no idea... and the days over and I've done my work for the day so I will look at it and have a play tommorrow when I get up in the morning. Anyway while I sleep and wait I thought some people might be able to help me with my problem. The car is leaking water badly from what seems to be around the back of the water pump region... its surely the water pump right? They are at Supercheap auto for $90 or so, so I might as well replace it if it isnt. Anyway, is there anything I should look out for when I do this? Any info is appreciated, as I have never done this before on a V6 Mitsubishi... but I'm sure I'll figure it out, it seems easy enough.

You should consider replacing the timming belt whilst your at it since you have pulled pretty much everything out. You will probably have to remove the crankshaft balancer pulley first.. Do a search there should be a mitsubishi service manual somewhere on this forum or a link to it. Should make your life easier.
Awesome, thanks alot... will do.

yeah, u wanna do the timing belt too if it's close to that time. (100k or 200k).
The leaking water from the water pump region could be the pump seal........
The entire water pump needs replacing if this is the case.
I can't seem to find 'service manual' in any of the searches... could someone please link me?
Otherwise I will have to buy one later today, I'll have more of a look though still. Do I need to take off the cam belts to take out the water pump? I think it is the seal on the back of the water pump, where that metal pipe comes out of it which connects to the bottom radiator hose. I dont mind replacing everything that doesnt cost too much even if its not needed... the belts were replaced at 100k and 200k, and the car has like 230k's on the clock or something... but I've spilt power steering fluid all over it, and I might as well change it, can't hurt.
Crankshaft balancer pulley? Is that basically the harmonic balancer? That main pulley? Don't I need a special tool for that?

Out of interest, any estimates on how long it would take to do all this, ie., replace all belts and the water pump? 'Cause mine's probably going to be in need of it shortly.
Timing belt takes hardly any time at all, all you have to do is loosen the belt tensioner with a 14mm socket if I recall correctly... water pump is a pain in the ****. You have to remove all the wiring harness, injection rail, manifold, valley, black plastic covers.... and that just gets you to where im at now. Takes probably under two hours to do the lot your first time, definately a one day job if you have all the right tools and know what you are doing.
Thanks Rob! Just to help other peoples searches I'll add the link that veradagirl posted here.
Magna Manual [MegaUpload Download Link] (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CA44VTQF)
I just looked at the file, its 45Mb or so... too bad I just got capped to 56k speed for another six days :( It's ok... It'll come slowly!

I got mine off by putting a large screw driver through a hole in it and bracing it against the block while I undid the centre bolt.
May have then used a puller but can't remember.
I was prepared to buy a rattle gun if necessary but didn't need to.

Cool, after looking at it thats sorta the best option for me... anyway, I removed the spring the goes from what seems to be the water pump and the belt tensioner, yet there is no adjustment on that tensioner, so I guess that dont come out like that? Anyway, Ill do the bottom pulley. While I'm doing all this, I just wanted to know what other small things I could do to help. My friend said something about the bottom seal, I think he means the seal where the crank is maybe? I can also probably change the sump gasket while im at it too.

You need to loosen the bolt in the centre of the tensioner pulley as well then it will move and give you your adjustment.

When I had the water pump in my old 3L TS changed, I had to use a genuine pump, because the non-genuine pump still leaked...it didnt come with a replacement housing, just internals  They had to remove all the belts, air con compressor and power steering pump to get to teh water pump....since it has to be removed, change the timing belt...although my car only had about 165,000 on the clock when the pump was changed, i got teh belts changed, coz, well, why not...the old ones had to come off anyway
Cheers Rob, I'll get to doing it today.
Fuzzlet: The leak seems to be coming from the back seal of the water pump... I thought it would just be the seal that is gone. I would rather replace the whole unit including the pipe especially if it saves me doing it all again, cost isn't an issue at all. Ill ring Mitsubishi now and find out what it's worth. I guess I could ring some wreckers and find out too if Bishi wants like $250 or something crazy for the crap.

At that price your getting a steal....i had to pay almost $400 for mine....total service (water pump and belt change) cost me almost a grand....having said that i had saved some dosh because the timing belt could be put off for a bit
