what could cause this ??
the other day when i filled up i put in a bottle of injector cleaner in my full tank could of this been a cause ?

nah u may have just unpluged something u shouldn't have. check the back of the gauge and see what colours the cables are then check around the HU for any cables the same

Sender unit fault. Lives in your tank. Looks like a common problem on our Mitsubishi. Mine drops to empty at times after filling to the max then eventually it will go back to its normal state till next fill. Stuffs around with the trip comp when this happens too. I just rely on the fuel light now and my trip meter.

when u say it stuffs around with the trip computer what do u mean?
as the way my fuel gauge is its always on empty and the fule ligth is always on.
i thougth yeah ill be rigth till i can get to rosehill to get it fixed as the whole time i have had the car i reset the k/m travled bit to see how much i get out of a tank,so acording to that i know when my tanks nearley empty like 450km and i know i have a quater of a tank left and time to fill up.
but if u say it stuffs with the trip computer does this mean me going off what im going off will be out?

mines exactly the same however occasionally when i fuel up it will go to full for a couple of days and then it will just go back down..

i just rely on the fuel used in the computer.. seems to be aiight ill get it fixed soon tho.

wondering.. How LONG does it take for your fuel guage to go from E to F after a full fillup?

My TH guage is a bit dikky, takes like 5m+ to reach F after startup and by that time
the trip computer has already recalculated the DTE itself and usually falls short.

Might be a dodgy sender too.

Whereas the KJ works great - guage has gone F by the time I've got the seatbelt on
and the trip computer recalculates itself pretty accurately based on the F tank.

mines always on empty with the ligth on,but i haverent filled up yet, still have over half a tank according to the kms travlled.
my thoughts where maybe when the h/u got installed the wires for the fuel gauge may of been in the same loom as h/u ones,or close by when it got installed may of loosened it and when tuning the system(thats when it happened)a big bass hit may of dislodged it.
but i do drive a tj2 magna sports and it seems to be a problem thats not overly rare.
but my car dosent seem to be responding as it normally does seems like it has less power.
could this be from and additive to the fuel or my fuel gauge saying its empty confusing my ecu

First thing i would do is remove the base of your back seat. You will see two clips one on each side pull them forward then lift the base of the seat and it will come straight out. THis will give you access to a cover undo the screws then you will see where the fuel line goes into the sender unit and a connector and cable. Remove the cable and check for dirt etc. May even be worth spraying some contact cleaner on it then push it back in and see how you go. If it is the fuel sender you may have trouble removing the fuel line it has a weird push fit. I couldnt undo mine to pull the sender out to have a look. Mine isnt as bad as yours after a few mins mabey up to half an our it goes to the full mark. DTE on the trip computer is inaccurate or will not register at all when problem occurs. I have just learned to live with it. In your case its different. You may need to remove the instrument cluster to get access to the plugs behind to see whats going on.
In regards to less power it may be related to the battery been disconnected when stereo was installed. Give it a few days up to a week of driving the the ECU should relearn your driving habits and power should be restored.

I must say it does one good to do searches on forum... I have just discovered the possible reason for my fuel guage problem. Mine (like other folks) drops to empty whenever I refill, then after 50-100km it sorts itself out - weird.

That's nice you learned to use the search function, but without actually adding any information to the topic was it worth posting? This thread is quite old.

Yes it was. Someone else may have some additional suggestions regarding this problem (since this post was created) and discovered its solution, and hence may kindly share their imformation with those who would appreciate it.

p.s. How did you just contribute to this post? Your in the same boat as me pal :-)

I had my fuel sender replaced yesterday! under warranty. I used 15 liters and the guage was at 1/2. but when they replaced it it showed more than 3/4 tank!

a good test is to fill up when the guage is showing 1/2 and if it only takes less than 20 liters the sender is stuffed.

Right... I will do that and see what happens!

Yeah this happens to mine too (03 TJII) full to empty on the gauge is about 10Lt from a full tank. I just use the trip computer, Seems to be acurate enough.
