View Full Version : Gearbox feels seedy
Lately my manual TL's gearbox seems a lot stiffer and notchier than it ever has been, particularly 1st to 2nd. It's not at the point where its grinding but its close to it. Sometimes I get a snapping noise coming out of 1st and its really notchy into 2nd, same deal with 2nd to 3rd but no where near as extreme.
It seems to get better after the gearbox warms up, but no matter how gently or slowly I change while cold the shifts always feel unhealthy.
I dont trash the gearbox, never snap gears, never done a burnout. Is this seedy crunchy feeling normal while the box is cold or is it something worth checking? Car has done 48k kms and tranny oil hasnt been changed since last scheduled service.

Have you changed the oil laterly..???
Thats what happens when you oil is wrong.. Syncro`s sticking.. oil change time if not..:)
Have you had the car since new?
Sounds like the synchros are worn.
Nah got it at 37k kms, was a SA fleet car before I got it. Everything else about the car suggests its been treated like a baby, but I guess the fatass that drove it before me could have been lazy with the clutch or just a poor manual driver. There's also a suss looking stain underneath between engine/box, but nothing leading to the stain.
Yep - get it into a box specialist and get the synchros looked at.
AFAIK the gearbox oil is simply for lubrication only (hence the need to only change it rarely as it doesn't filter anything like engine oil) so this won't affect the quality of the gearchange.

Also if the gearbox oil has never been changed then it will also affect the Synchros as the oil is prob getting old and chutty..:)
My first step would be changing the oil and go from there.. Im putting my money on the oil as its fine once she warms up..:)
Maybe its the cold weather.. I'll change oil and see how that goes, otherwise hit up Mitsubishi and scrape the bottom of the warranty barrel.

the problem you are having with gear changes IS an oil issue, and NOT worn synchros... u say " it's get better when warm " which instantly tells u it's an oil problem, due to the fact the oil thins out when warm/hot, if it were worn synchros.. wouldnt matter at amy temp, u'd always have crap gear changes! go to ur dealer and mention it, mention that u get "baulking" when changing gears, worse in the morning etc.. the fix is to drain and refill using castrol vmx-b oil.. worth abit.. but under warranty, shouldnt cost u a cent!
good luck

I'm going with oil too. My gearbox did this same thing a while back until I got a new clutch put in. They drained the gearbox and found some metal shavings in it aswell (probably from the syncros) so they flushed it with about 4 bottles of oil, refilled it and it's been magic ever since.
Mitusbishi bled my clutch and it helped alot with 1st-2nd. Not totally, but only does it 10% of the time now.
i think i have this problem too  everything sounds the same. so got to change the oil in my geart box.

I will put money on it being this.
Since winter has come along my gearbox is alot more notchy when cold.
After its warmed up, all is good.
Mitsubishi's manual gearboxes are pretty strong.
Everything points to oil, especially since it's only started recently with the cold mornings and is really smooth once everythings warmed up. I'll change the oil when I get to sydney or back home after everything is truely heatsoaked.
Turns out 45000 gearbox oil change was missed so it was running on original oil :doubt: Changed the oil last night... bugger to get it in but its done now. Haven't driven yet because I wont be sober till 3 :D

Wow. Lucky you changed it now... Wouldn't of done any damamge, but not good for the gearbox. No wonder it felt dodgy.
Gearbox feels happy again :D The oil looked metallicy in the sun and there was an insane amount of stuff stuck to the sump plug. I doubt it did any damage but its all good now.

Good result m8!!:D
Mine has the same problem. When I got it @ 60,000 ks , it had a chronic 1st-2nd clunk.
After speaking to the previous owner, he'd had Zupp's try all sorts of things, including blends of oils. When my mechanic changed the oil, it was Red, indicating...Autotrans fluid? FIIK.
New oil made no difference. Got the local dealer to change it at service 3mths later. No difference.
What type of oil did you use?
The castrol stuff recommended in the car book thingo.. 75w-85w stuff.
I think the oil helped a little (probably the placebo effect) because I just adjusted the clutch and its like a new car. I dont think the clutch was disengaging much at all, would explain the hard shift from 1st to 2nd and general crunchy feeling of the box.
Shift are now perfectly smooth and so much easier, hope there wasn't any or much damage to the box  Some of the shifts sounded pretty nasty.
So mulga - adjust your clutch. Should be 175-180mm from the floor. Pull the electrics off the cruise control sensor and loosen the locknut, then twist the bolt until the pedal comes out enough, replace lock and electrics and go for a drive.
