Ok so Im going down the highway and the auto shifter manages to find its way one spot too far going from Drive and ends up in second at about 120kmph.

So it decides that it will still do this even though that would mean it revs up to about 5000rpm.....I quickly put it back into 3rd. My question, does your auto transmission do this to because Im sure it never used to do this.....I though you couldnt change down to 2nd until about 80 - 100kmph.....

Thanks :P

according to your profile you have a TJ Tippy ?

Ive got a TE 3L Auto, and just recently i was going up a steep long hill in the wet, and i put my foot down abit to keep the speed up, and it dropped down to second. i was doing about 80, and proceeded to spin the wheels, ( my tires are crap ), but it scared the **** outta me.

It does do some seriously stupid gear changes sometimes. If your not having any other problems with your box then i wouldnt worry, but if your box is doing other stupid stuff, id suggest resetting the ECU, disconnect the battery for 30ish seconds.

When was the last time you had your tranny oil and filter changed ?

Its a TH Auto 3.5ltr..........the tranny has been into service place twice once for replacement of torque converter and again coz it just blew itself up (suspected dodgy repair job). The transmission has still been changing dodgy and stuff, and clunks when choosing reverse coming from neutral or park and even drive.

So yeah it is a dodgy transmission, but I am sure It would only change into second at about 3000rpm...

I have TH 3.5l, and i can change to 2nd even above 100kph ;) Hell, i can drive 1st gear to 80kph. But it won't downshift from 2nd to 1st unless i drop down to 40kph. Hmmm

I have a kr verada and the transmission has to be one of the worst aspects of the car, it will change gears randomly all on its own, I could be going down a hill at 100 with my foot off the accalerator, and it will change to third then second and rev the tits off the motor, you have to then move the lever to second and then drive again to get it to come out of second, stupid thing, it's been doing it ever since i have had the car(30K), seems to do it worse in hot weather and it has been serviced and ecu reset, only thing that did was made it flare a little between each gearchange

Also when i start the car and put it into gear, you can feel it go into gear , but then it will allow the motor to rev up a little and then slams into gear a second time.

like Ulciscor mentioned, reset the tranny ecu. Disconnect battery for around 10min to do a decent reset. Then gearbox will re-learn driving style... hopefully should remove the quirks

Looking at the service manual, the section on Auto Trans includes things like "Displaced Shifting Points" and "Shocks from N to D" etc.

If someone wants to host an 850k PDF, I can E-mail it.

Not sure if it will help as it's pretty complex, but it might!:D
