Hey all
Started a Manual Conversion on my 3.5L TH Advance Auto yesterday morning at 10am. The Donor car was a Manual 3.0L TF Exec. I have some pics but i'll have to upload them sometime. Damn there is a huge difference in the size and weight of the Auto and Manual boxes! So hopefully it will be finished soon!
Oh wait! It is finished!!!! We finished the whole thing by 6pm last night and was fanging it arounD! We had actually finished around 4, but we ran into problems with my LPG wiring shorting against the chassis because it was in the same hole as where he clutch was to go. We had to remove the clutch again and drill a new hole for the wiring and then extend it.
But OMFG!!! Manual Conversion is the best Modification a Auto Magna driver can do! The car pulls like crazy!!

Im just about to do this myself, so I would be interested in any details/problems that you came across. Ive been told by a few sources that the drive shafts dont need to be changed and neither does the starter motor??? Well done tho!

I'm a 2nd gen manual V6 wagon owner, and I think I have heard the all 3rd gen wagons are auto?? Is this correct? If so, has anyone yet done this conversion on a wagon?
Seems that a lot of new wagons are auto-only, like the Mazda 6 for instance. Which makes me think I'll stick with the 2nd gen and keep her in top nick, at least for a while. Good to see that the swap option is doable, though. Something to keep in mind for the future.

was this the from that bloke that was selling a full manual kit for $700 in the trade forums the other day?
Pretty amazing stuff, didn't Asylum pay a few thou for a manual conversion awhile back? I'd but up for a manual conversion if it was under $1k. Did you have to get it enginered or anything?

Well, mine is a manual TS executive V6, so obviously there were a few different 2nd gen manual V6 wagons...
So there are manual 3rd-gen V6 wagons? Just not in the Verada?
Good Work?
Three questions:
1. How much did the conversion cost?
2. How hard was it? Can it be done in the backyard?
3. What cup is the girl in the avatar? Best avatar ever! Makes me proud to be Australian

1. How much did the conversion cost?
I think he got it from this thread http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37469&highlight=manual+conversion
which was $700 for the gear than $300 for installation OR $150+auto trans.
I think you could sell the auto transmission on its own for close enough to $1000 so just pay the $300 for the install and you've got a free manual conversion. Seems like a pretty awesome deal to me. Wish this had come up a few months ago when I actually had money :(

Well you say the manual transplant was successful for the manual in your car, but how'd the auto transplant go? :) Top stuff :)

TecoDan has a manual TH advance wagon.....manual 3rd gen wagons are just hard to come by. Heck Dan's is "double rareity" lol...its a manual wagon, and an advance model.......having said that my old TS wagon was an advance..........(only meant it had cruise control and centre clock)

There is one member that has done this conversion on their Verada and apparently they have not changed the drivers side drive shaft and have had no problems. I thought i better be safe and changed the driveshaft seeing as the manual shaft is physically 2mm longer than the auto shaft. Asylum has reason to think that because of the extra length on the shaft it created extra pressure on his $2000 LSD and in turned cracked it.
The starter motors need to be changed with the manual version. I am unsure of what is different though.
A problem we came across was that i had a 3.5L and the parts came from a 3L. The mount to the block for the halfshaft on the drivers side driveshaft was slightly different. On the 3L bracket i was just a flat piece of metal bolted to the block, whereas the 3.5L had something extra sticking out on the block so the bracket had a little inset area on it. We held he mounts side by side and figured out that the thickness on the bracket of the 3.5L and 3L were the same.. just the 3.5L had a bit cut out. We could have pressed out the join on the driveshaft and swapped mounting brackets then pressed the shaft back together, but instead we got 2 washers and placed them into the inset area of the bracket and on the bolt and simply bolted it onto the block. Looks like its fine and works a treat.
Also the engine plate on the manuals are slightly narrower on the inside than the autos. When placing it on the block we discovered that it did not sit flush because of this. We merely ground out the little bit in the middle that was causing the problem and its all good now.
So yeah! Best modification i have done to the car! Very worth it in the end. I was very lucky to have been able to do it in such a short time and with such little money. Good Luck and i hope you get it done!

Yeh i was reading carsales guide to TJ's the other day and the sports wagons were the only ones with manual option.
Choonga - Very well done mate, i dont think anyone could complain with what you've had done and at an awesome price . Though would have been cheaper to just buy a manual in the first place :P.

your correct about the rada, we didn't change the driveshaft but the rada isn't lsd equipped, when the manual has an lsd the driveshaft must be changed, but you can get away with the auto one with no lsd,
congrats on the speedy conversion, have you had it engineered yet? it's a great bang for buck mod,

Just out of interest guys how did you go with the firewall?? I know there is one main hole needed for the clutch, how big was this? Was there mounting points etc for the master cyliner?
SYNRGY
14-07-2006, 08:45 AM
you need to drill a big hole and 2 little bolt holts for the master cylinder to fit through
thats the only hole in the firewall you need
there is a template kinda thing already pressed into the firewall which makes it easy

yeah what he said! the firewall seems to be made up of 2 sheets of metal... whereas in those places we had to drill/cut there was only once cheet of metal... very easy indeed!
