Inserts are different to whole struts. Inserts require the original strut to be butchered and the insert to be... err... inserted into the butchered strut. Sounds as ugly as it is in reality.

No offense to anyone who has this done...

The Koni Reds are fitted to the Ralliart. They are an entire strut - and very nice I may add as well.

Don't replace a single strut, do both of them. To get them installed - roughly $75 a pair. It isn't rocket science. You also need a wheel alignment, especially since you said you 'destroyed' a shock.

hmmm need a wheel to get an alignment  yep the struts totally ripped from the car along with most hte suspension on the passenger side. I can install the strut easlily, just getting the inset in the strut. its about 950 for front pair in red, or 500 for the yellows. I thought I may as well upgrade the shocks while im at it.

edit: looks like mitsu is the only place to get reds, there not listed on the koni site. even philcom can only get yellow. and there inserts.

WTF did you do to manage that???

Koni Reds - wow - they are expensive from Mitsubish! I paid ~$500 for 4 and springs off a Ralliart a while ago... Very worthwhile! You may find a Ralliart owner who has gone coilovers with some for sale...

Inserts still suck. Talk to one of the members of the Newcastle Magna Club and his experiences with a certain old rickety bridge + inserts!

I understand that the Koni reds are the basic Koni gas version.

Yellows are the Sport Adustable version.

It would be very interesting to see the install instructions.

used to be a piece of cake in the MkI and MkII Cortina days to buy a pair of Lotus Cortina inserts and bang them into an existing strut.
I remember that there was a threaded insert at the top of the strut body, it was stopped from rotating by being peened into 4 slots around the insert. Just required a bit of care to "unpeen" and then rotate the insert nut out. Tip the bits out, drop in the new strut insert, do up the threaded insert and peen back into place.

Has anyone done the Yellow version upgrade??

If you get the Koni Reds they are adjustable. You will need to compress them, without the spring. When they bottom out, twist them, you will feel the strut locate in the "KEY" at the bottom. Then simply turn to the right for stiffer or to the left for softer, simple, use a mate to test for compression and rebound, hold one end each and push/pull test till you are happy. Easy.

I've installed the Koni adjustable inserts myself (aka Koni Yellow's). I havn't had any problem so far and I doubt i'll ever have a problem, Koni has made inserts for decades and from the people I know who use it havn't complained about its integrity.

I don't know aboud the story about this 'said' person in Newcastle who was having problems with it.

I don't think it would..

We have KYBs in the rear of the TF with Pedders up front and yeah.. it feels a bit different because of the stiff pedders springs/shock combo.. But it shouldn't hurt for a little while I wouldnt think!

Advice: Ask the experts.. It always helps!
