View Full Version : Catalytic converter - Gutted!

After a little drive Saturday night we decided to go back to Guru's house to guy my catalytic converter.

Performance wise - The car has a lot less lag in first now and second just wants to go a lot harder, the car does have 290,000kms on it so it was proberbly blocked.

I'll proberbly replace it with a hi-flow unit one day, but if you've got a spare 1/2 hr it's well worth it.

Hopefully have the mpg's up soon of the car running to blow the shit out of the cat.

do you see much fumes coming out the back without your Cat?

smell the difference? do you think you'll be pulled over by the cops?

since you are destorying your cat, have you tried drilling a hole in the Cat, I've heard stories that when there's enough pressure in there, it'll make a "chuuuuuuushhhhh" sound , like a cheap BOV... you wanna try that?

HAHA.. just for laughs, not for real...

Cheers

I have noticed, that since my valve stem seals are stuffed it seems to blow a bit more smoke on take off - but that might just be my imagination.

If you ever get a chance to gut a cat go for it, their wierd things and i can see how they restrict flow!

I'm going to drop the exhaust off the back and take it for a burn and see if its any quicker aswell. It sounded mean when we gave it a quick rev.

respect for you is low since for a little extra power you thought it fit to pollute the earth about 10 times more then usual. this is like me coming over to your house and dumping a few barrels of toxic waste.

even at most tracks now they make you can catylists.

I love the way you manage to put everything in a real-life situation ;)

I intend on replacing it with a higher flowing item now that I can see that it was blocked. I just couldn't justify $300-400 on one if the one that was on the car wasn't blocked.

I also would just like to mention I think it's a pretty stupid thing to do.

I also wouldn't stand behind that car when you start it if you paid me $1000 dollars. Very, very toxic stuff you're playing with there.

I guess it's kinda like the easy gun-control solution:

Step 1.
Put all the people who want to carry guns into a large room.
Step 2.
The problem will sort-out itself :)

thank you since i live in real life i see everything to be that way.

when i got my new exhaust i bought a high flow cat for it it was like $250 extra or somthing and that was like 2 years ago because i respect other people.

if you get found out, dont worry about the defect since its a $10,000 fine.

It's interesting that pre 1980s cars don't even come with cadalytic converters as standard - it proberbly explains the smells that come out of them.

It was for experimental purposes only and will be replaced

I bought a vn commo with a gutted cat and it sounded like crap, like something was wrong with the sound of the car.
I would never do this to my car though, as it's pollution and it's a big arse fine too.

emission laws where brought out in the late 70's , same era when honda brought out the CVCC , controlled vortex combustion chamber to help reduce harmfull waste. my 1983 toyota ae86 has a cat converter.

also due to the fact that most pre 80's cars dont run on ULP......LP doesnt contain the chemical...think it starts with a B, which the Cat Converter is used to eliminate...
I think without the CAT the emissions coming out of the car are also Carsnogenic, can really mess someone/lots of ppl up.
I also hope u didnt breath in any dust, or touch any of the shit inside your CAT with bare hands, as u could get really sick.

Also interesting they used to use Lead and Asbestos as common-place.

We're learning all the time that some of the chemicals we used to use day-to-day are very toxic.. We're alwayts taking steps forward.

To intentially take steps backwards is a pretty crazy thing to do.

...as I said before, it was only done to find out if that was the cause of my car running like shit - and it was.

just a couple of questions. firstly, how did you actually do it? did you know the stuff inside is extremely toxic? why are you upgrading to a high flow cat when the cheaper factory replacement is rated up to something like 200hp?(i think something like that)
heres a link for anyone who wants some general info on what a cat is/does

ADR 27a was introduced in 1974 to take effect on cars built after may 1076. Most manufacturers took it on early, such as Mazda with what they called a thermal reactor bolted to the side of the engine.
As the years have the ruls have been added to and changed however it was not unitil 1986 that cats were complsary however any car that has had a pollution device fitted that was not compulsary at the time of manufacture must have that device fitted and servicable.

so have you put it back on? better do it for the sake of you, people around you..and everyone else. there's enough shitboxes running on our road ,don't make worse....

Definately. I've been looking at the services for a job up here recently and they list asbestos lined concrete pipes used in water supply.

are there any non-toxic ways of testing if your cats clogged?

Just a little insert,

Gutted catalytic does improve torque reponse (full stop), i've run a dyno on before and after on Dyno Dynamics WA. So, it does feel more responsiveness on your car.

Gutted catalytic does increase CO2 gases (full stop), i've tested before and after by Perth Exhaust Centre. You can feel the difference a lot.

Police can not, ever, give you "on the spot" fine...although they carry and check with their CO2 sensing meter. What gives you fine are those guys in PIT inspection, unless you fitted cat prior to PIT inspection.

On turbo cars gutted catalytic prevent back fire, especially those who highly modified. Thats why you find that WRX and etc, that use bolt-on kit such as HKS and etc, usualy they by pass the cat.

Just check your local HKS, ApexI and etc distributor. Those who dare to act, therefore accept the responsibility.

Cheers.

Wow, nice 7 year old thread reborn....

The Police have special sticks they pull open and put infront of your muffler, which tests the temperature. If its hotter than the ordinary range, they'll give you a yellow slip to go get tested at an RTA.

The RTA also have whole street blockoffs/random inspection days where they will go through every car that comes through in order to see all the defects it may have (bald tyres, shockies, pod filter, etc...)

Cat Converters collapse onto themselves when they get old (making the car run like shit/smell like rotton egg), causing the owner of the car to either get a new one, or to gut the thing. Its all up to the police/RTA. I don't think you can get away with a rooted cat if you're running an Evo 9 with a fully worked engine...

Oh ok so your saying they cant give a 10 grand fine straight up. My mate had a magna 1997 his car smelt like shit for years. He talked to a couple people they took the cat out it was completly emty aparently his 02 was stuffed aswell witch slowley caused the cat to callapse so if the RTA wanted to fine a poor person like this that dosent know anything about cars thats absolute bullshit.

Mate it goes for anything that u can get done for unroadworthiness. Quite simply if ur car fails pink slip inspection u must get it repaired. If ur mate went like that for years then he is breaking the law by not having a properly registered car

Actually his car passed the roadworthy when he braught it was a very neat magna. Mechanically perfect. He got it checked out after a while he ignored it cause he thought it was normal he had work all the time so thats probably why he didnt get it checked. So if RTA wanted to do that to someone like that id be pritty *** dirty.

Really a pointless thread mine, all this thread is doing is discussing something we all know is illegal so now time to close
