As the title says, i want to get a CAI for my TJ VRX. I don't want to pay a lot of money about $250 fitted. I can't do it myself coz i'm hopeless and i don't have enough time. 'does anyone know a place/places in Victoria where it can be done. Preferably in the south east suburbs.

Also, might seem a silly question, will i need to get a POD filter for a CAI or can i use the srock pannel that i have. Or is a POD better.

Cheers

*Ducks for cover at the incoming armies of pod vs panel war*
Mate the only CAI that is really available for the 3rd gen extends the stock snorkel down to the bottom of the bumper (there's apparently a nice little spot it sits).
As for getting a pod, no it's not neccessary at all and if you want to keep it basic go the K&N panel filter.

Two options:

Stock air box with either stock panel or K&N panel
Take off the intake going over the radiator and fit some flexi hose down to the passanger side foglight whole or by the tow hook.

Pod with bustom CAI
You'll need a pod and something like EZ-boys pod box which encases the pod and runs pipe down to the same place.

CAIs that relocate the pod to by the front bar can lead to problems (eg 'RPW' and 'TH Smoker' kits)

Question answered, close the thread, before it ends in a POD vs Panel **** fight :) I won't even attempt to go there

Search for "Easy TL CAI!!!". I'd post a link, but I've no idea how to.

There are other options for a 3rd gen CAI in the topic above. There is a moulded snorkel available from Emtech, in SA (they may know of a local fitter) for $165. It looks "factory" and fits from the stock air box to just to the rear of the passenger side headlight. The battery box needs some material cut away to fit. It is reputedly good for ~6kW. There some guys on the list who have used them or rigged up a similar system using flexible hose.

Involves cutting your battery box and removing a little plastic plate in the front bar. Everything is ok except you may boil your battery :doubt:

Hehe run a little pipe from the CAI to the battery, problem solved :D.

I have removed my battery box to fit my big terminals and cables for the stereo anyway, so that isnt a problem...

How could it boil the battery... Im lost...

i've had this setup for years and i've had no problems what so ever.. Even WTCHME with his 165fwkw+ magna has the same setup and had no problems.

He's saying that the box is there as a heatshield, without the shield it's possible the battery could overheat.

Well actually the magna's battery have been known to overheat WITH the battery box on.. something to do with it not breathing.. something for you guys to ponder on:D

When 90% of cars have their batteries in the open engine bay?? Or is the magna one in a particularily bad spot?

The TL CAI will be useless for you, it's even useless for me having a VRX, but front bars are different and has some electrical stuff in the way.

Correct, thats why the battery cover was removed mid TJ onwards I believe

Only think I'm going to say on the CAI issue is that the length of piping required exposes the air induction system to potentially more hot air than before.

A member did some thermostat testing with and without a CAI and it turned out that the air at the air filter was usually a few degrees warmer than the factory intake system.

Just had a look and think, if you removed the blanking plate in the front bar the air that misses the CAI will fly around the battery and keep it cool anyway but that isnt the main issue.

Theres room to wiggle the battery bout 25mm towards the side of the car, but even still, running a decent diameter pipe from air intake box to this hole (even squashing the pipe up) will come seriously close to the radiator fan. Theres no way you'd want one of those blades smashing into CAI pipe if it came loose - would do serious damage to pipe and fan, neither being cheap puppies to replace.

if u decide to go with a pod, u must run some sort of SEALED piping to it, otherwise u may as well have left ur induction stock.

pods are pointless (and will actually do more harm than good) if ur going to leave them in the engine bay in an unsealed box.

For those wanting a picture of the moulded intake, search for the topic I mentioned, there is a picture of one installed in a pre TL 3rd gen. The intake works more effectively in a TL/TW, but it is reputed to still work better than a stock intake in other 3rd gens.

Thanks

Question.
Where does one get the correct flexible hose that will not burn or heat up from????

Cheers
