Hello all,
Anyone have any idea how to get the gto steering wheel off?? it has an airbag; i dont care it i set it off i just dont want to be injured...
There's 4 holes in the back of the steering wheel but neither phillips or flat head screw drivers seem to go in... ie i dont know whether or not those bolts are meant to come out... and i cant see whats in there as there's no room between the dash and the wheel for my head.

Also the gto would have a similar ecu to the magna ie same dimensions... there's 2 floating round and i think ones for the airbag but there's a smaller one where the magna ecu is (ie its half the size of my ts ecu only writing in japanese...) im just confused. The larger one (same size as ts ecu) doesnt want to be seperated from the loom and has red wiring which is similar to the loom runing to the crumple sensor thingys...

If anyone could straighten this out for me i'd be thankful;
peace out;
aj

i understand if this doesnt make much sense i just described it...

Hidey ho!!!

I can't help with the removal problem, but try using a mirror to see where your head doesn't fit.

Cya!!!

I'm curious why you need to remove it in the first place?

So the GTO steering wheel is going on the magna?
If you blow the airbag, doesn't that make the steering wheel useless? Also for legal reasons doesn't an airbag fitted wheel have to work in order to be roadworthy?

i don't know; but the magna doesnt have an airbag so it doesnt really make a difference; That site only had 1 thread on steering wheels and it wasnt very helpful... thanks anyway

Yeh but when the wheel blows, you may damage the front of it? I guess it could always be repaired though.

Call up Mitsu and ask to speak to one of their service guys and go from there..

Call up Moorooka Mitsu.. Ask to speak to Eoin (Pronounced Owen) and tell him that you're AJ off AMC and you need to speak to one of the service guys for a sec..

He should hook you up..

SuFz :bowrofl:

The entire unit gets replaced I believe.

i dont care it i set it off i just dont want to be injured... The firies use industrial strength gaffer tape on unexploded airbag covers

Its probably a hex key screw

Magna's have a seperate Airbag ECU system. Your supposed to have special wiring too. Legally can't do it.

Really the best you can hope for is to seperate the airbag module from the steering wheel, and install the steering wheel only in the magna, hoping that the magna's steering wheel cover will fill in for you where the airbag once was. However this is inherently dangerous.

i cant tell if u think i'm doing illegal **** or not...
my magna has never had an airbag; hoping to get the gto steering wheel off intact and put it in the magna... with an airbag that wont go off.

ie have the airbag and therefore steering wheel intact but the airbag disconnected

To be honest, you'll have to ask an automotive engineer. You might be able to have the airbag system properly disabled. I imagine your going to have a couple of spare wiring harnesses when you try and put it in your car.

An airbag needs electrical power to fire its detonators.

If there's no electricity (ie unconnected) it will never fire, however much you abuse it.

Electrical power comes via its airbag module & car battery; if battery supply is disrupted
the airbag module has capacitors inside to store enough energy to fire the airbags.

yeah thats what i thought; the 1/2 cut has never had a battery since its been in my possession (about 3months).. do you think the cap's would've discharged by now??

yea probably

Control module is always separate from the airbag anyway, connected by
bright coloured cable (yellow?) which you can unplug easily anyhow.

Mitsu uses torqx screws for its airbag wheels usually?
