It seems there are various systems, depending which Magna/Verada you have.
Are there any that have no cooler. The second gen had cooling in the radiator and also a separate cooler. In the case of the second gen, I assume there is no benefit in fitting a second external cooler and this could even be a disadvantage, as the fluid would then be too cool. But if any of the Magnas/Veradas have only cooling in the Radiator, I would imagine it is essential to fit an external cooler. Have any second gen owners by-passed the radiator cooling and kept only the external cooler in circuit. I can't see the radiator doing much (the temperature in there is too high). Why does Mitsubishi complicate things, as there is the possibility of coolant and Tranny fluid comtaminating each other? I have noticed new Camry 4 cyl (don't know about 6 cyl) does not have a cooler. Does anyone know what the ideal tranny fluid temperature is (for Magna).

I dont know much about 2nd gens but in my car the tranny cooler made a huge difference to the stability of the auto. It flares less and is more responsive. The transmission fluid would want to be between a range of temperatures adn this would be why they put them in the radiator to heat it. I was recommended to use the coolers in serial so that it would reach its operating temperature quicker but stop it getting too hot.

Manufacturers have been building transmission coolers into the radiator for years, its pretty standard stuff. Except for Holden who decided with the VS commy (and maybe other previous models) to do away with a cooler at all and make it an optional extra as part of the expensive "tow pack". Therefore many unsuspecting VS owners who fitted a non standard towbar and no cooler blew up their trannies! Nice one GM!

So be thankful Mits built one in!

Transmission hydraulic fluid is designed to work right from cold,
it does not need to heat up to any operating temperature.

It is also the 'coolant' for the tranny's clutchpacks and moving parts so
the colder it stays the better.
