Hi there,
I just joined these forums so id like to say thanks to everyone for reading my message.
I just bought a 2001 TJ Magna Advance Sedan and i was wondering does it have an electric radio antenna? At the moment, when i turn on the radio it just sticks in the same place. And when i try to push it in it seems to have too much resistance. Im worried that someone will bend it when i park it at the shopping centre.
Thanks in advance.

I have a late 2001 TJ Advance too and my antenna is an auto, I think it was just the execs that didnt have this but I could be wrong.

i'd think it should have an electric, does it have an aftermarket headunit? or even signs there might have been one?
should be pretty easy to tell if you have a look in the boot, just pull back the side carpet, and if its massive, it should be electric :P

Wow thats some quick replies!
Nah its a total stock head unit (im not getting into the subs game again..my ears were never the same in my old car). I took a look in the boot today and i could see the top part of the antenna but there is a big piece of steel that covers the bottom part (where the motor would be). I will post some photos tomorrow.
Is there any reason why it might be broken...i hope its not expensive.

it actually depends on what month the car was built...believe it or not.....in 2001 there is the type with the mast and aerial and the type with assembly only. change was in agust i think but cant remmember which way is which. call a dealer with your VIN and they can tell you.

Thats interesting, well i think my magna was made in May 2001. ill check in the boot again today to see if it really has an electric antenna.
If it has one and it really is broken then is it something that can be fixed? Or does that mean i must buy a new electric antenna?:doubt:
Has anyone else had a dud electric antenna?

You might be able to fix it if you are electonically minded, but you can just buy a replacement, autobarn charge about $50 i think so it's not too bad.

Yeah unfortunately my closest Autobarn is about 120kms away! I had a look at Super cheap auto but they only had replacements for Excels and Commodores. I guess i could order one in.
Anyway, i had a good look in the boot and it seems that my antenna is electric as you can see from the photo. You can also see how it permanently sticks outside. Is it quite difficult to replace this thing? Im not an electrician but im willing to save some cash.

Sounds about right. My July 2001 VR-X's antenna doesn't move.

Just dont get Mitsubishi to replace it, they'll charge you an arm and a leg, I learnt that lesson a few years back. If you can force the antenna to extend completely you can try lubricating it with oil which might fix the problem.

Yeah thats a good idea...cuz manually extending the antenna is not a problem so ill try that tomorrow. What lubricant should i use? Is WD40 okay? Have you done this yourself on your Magna? I would prefer to avoid dealers cuz i know they can charge and arm and or leg for this kind of work.

Black plastic knob usually means its manual... probably even an Aerpro replacement.
yeah just extend it, hold a cloth against it whilst squirting WD40.
WD40 is a good cleaner.

From those pics it doesnt look electric.. The inside the boot pic you see is very bare.. the white think you see is actually the boot release module not the arial.. Arial sits behind it and rather bulky if it electric..
Id say yours is manual and is stiff as it hasnt been used for a while.. WD40 it and give it a yank.. make sure you pull straight up or you will bend it..:D

Yeah well thats interesting...it would be great to see what a power window module looks like. Cuz now im not sure what ive got. I thought the Magna advance had power everything.

yeah same here.
Mine was recessed and when I tried to poke it, the tip fell further inside.
In the middle of house renos so haven't got time to rip open the aerial bits.
Luckily radio is like TV anyways, there's NEVER anything good on.
All the music is continuously repeated... soooo boring I'd rather listen to talkback.
Besides, I've got CD and a glorious V6 to listen too. :D Love that 6G74 on song!

Thanks guys for all your input...I put WD40 on the Antenna and i can manually push it all the way into the hole now. I dont listen to the radio too much either (thank god for ipods) but i was just worried about some punks ripping off my antenna. A few years ago this happened to my friends Skyline GTS-T at a Sydney shopping centre..all that was left was a bent hole in the body of the car.

I have a tj adv, power windows, mirrors, but not the antenna :)
mine antenna is also stuck at half mast, doesnt really bother me, i put in a pioneer head deck with mp3 support, so i havent heard a repeat song in weeks lol. radio is yawn anway, plus sick of signal crapping out in city tunnels/etc.
lol, my sis has a 05 or a 06 magna wagon, and i drive that around the other day, and scared myself silly whenever i keyed the ignition, as the sound of the antenna up and down made my think the fuel pump was going nuts lol.
take a look at ride HEG51's, http://whiskeyit.homeip.net/~xwhiskey/magnacruise/100_0333.JPG hes replaced the antenna with his uhf pole :-) thats nice!
(i drool every time i see his ride lol, i soo want that body kit!)

Thanks xwhiskey...i was waiting for a fellow advance owner to let me know what the deal is with the antenna. Your friends magna looks really slick. My one is totally stock at the moment. I dont have the cash to make it look that good.
