Hi, I was wanting to start drifting my car, do you pros out there know whether the stock hand brake is strong enough to take it continusly being pulled whilst high speeds?

Well, the handbrake is made up of a cable which basically tells the back brakes to activate (read: brake pad on disc -- or is there a secondary something for the handbrake).
I haven't heard of one breaking -- and i've never broke mine :D If it starts to come loose you can tighten them up aswell. Theres a pair of nuts under the rear portion of the centre console, on the TR/TS series anyway.

It operates a drum brake, unless you've got an AWD.
OT: midwoodawd, are you alive?

yeah, i heard something about drums for hand brake.. so if you excessively use the handbrake, that's going to over heat the drums ain't it? and then after awhile, due to heat build up and drums don't dissipate much heat, the hand brakes may stop working until it cools down right?
so... it's not a very good things to do then for too long... and also, will that mean changing the rear rotor be more complicated?

yeah it makes changing the rear brakes a little more complicated.
I don't recommend it - but to do it you don't need to have the hand brake on for excessive times - just need to jab it to break traction and jab it again if it regains traction too quickly - don't need to hold it on for the whole slide.
I have a great short movie of what happen when you hand brake 180 at 70kph that alot of the adelaide guys have seen that i will upload soon if i can get the programs to work properly!! haha

I've only done stupid things in my 1st Gen TM GLX, the hand brake is connected to the Caliper, works like a gem.. the most i've achieved was 270, couldn't do 360, i'm not good enough. and this was kinda wet too...
I know what you mean by the Jab. only good at high speeds though.
oh well, I don't think I want to drift in my TF, it'll kill tyres.. i can't afford new tyres.. they are too expensive.

Try drifting your car on a water with diesel drift track (usually for driver training etc) using stock wheel that are over inflated!! works like a gem and believe me its good fun!!
Strutbrace is recomended for these sort of fun activities!!!!
Have fun!!

hha ive only really attempted this in my mums CSI Camry Wagon Auto. ahha its fun. (cos its not ur own) but its obviously alot easier in an auto.
i also did it n my magna once. up north in kalbarri, on a gravel/sandy track. going about 70km/h went into second with clutch in put the handy on, and did a nice right turn into the next track, and took off in second, pretty shmick i must admit! hehe

As I am aware that those Hand Brake wires could snap without you knowing. everything breaks after a while..depends how we use it i suppose.

as manual said you dont have to have the handbrake on throughout the whole "drift". If you learn how your car kicks out you can just jab the handbrake causing the rear end to slide out...because its a front wheel drive you will have to keep the handbrake on for a longer period of time.
ive noticed after a few handbrakies the brakes start to sqeel....but this is common on the magnas without doing drift....
oh yer and watch out for gutters... ;)

oh i keep a close eye on gutters! hehe. a bit hard at nights though, that's when stunts happen.
nah, everytime i've pulled the e-brake, my rears lock and i'm very scared that i'll get flat spots and wear out the rear tyres too quick... so i've stopped...

depends what surface u do it on....thats why u buy stockies....or retreads
WhiteDevil

but i like my current rims, and stockies on this rims would make it look silly... if i only change the rear and not the front, it'll look silly..
are there any drift parks in Vic that people know of? like a circuit that is just for drifting? maybe then it'll be worth the trouble of changing tyres.

i love the handbrake! its so much easier to lock up than on any other car i've had, it sticks really easily and you dont always have to adjust it like on the other 4cyl cars i have.
just that damn locking thing, that when you let go its still stuck on and you end up with half the car on the road and the other (front) half in the long grass with no traction... hehe dirt hooning in my magna with bald tyres=very funny.

hey melanie - heres a hint - try holding your thumb on the button when you jerk the hand brake - this way it doesn't lock on ;)

I use (well used) my handbrake exesivlly whenever it was wet  , and I have lost tension in the right hub (again :( )
If you over use your handbrake the tension mechanism inside the hub that activates the drum brakes could over tighten and sort of unlock and unwinds itself causeing one or both cables to loosen(as has happened to me twice  ) The brakes themselves I have found last a while( I only use it in the wet, so using it in the dry will sorten the life of the pads)

my other cars have no centre consoles and a cotter pin to stop the handbrake from sticking and i got confused and thought i was in one of the rally cars  . i also went for the clutch to change gears today (auto) . just tripping out i think

Yes you can rip out the mechanism that pulls on the handbrake inside the rear drum, it happened on both sides of my car when I bought the thing, and took me ages to sort it out properly, so probably not a good idea. :?

while the topic is on handbreaks i was juss wonder if there was a way i could tighten mine on my TE ... my mum has drivin it since new and she puts the hb on pretty solidly and it now literally falls down if not put on hard ... i was also wondering if anyone knew if it was just the back wheels used when the hb is on
any help is appreciated

there's a bolt and nut that you can faster to pull the e-brake wires tighter, and the e-brake is only the rear wheels. unless you mod your car, i assume it's stock.
refer to your manual, it's got the instructions as to how you can tighten your e-brake wires in detail...
it's under the centre console. Very easy to do.
