Hey guys,
When i bought my car from a dealer, i received a main key and a remote, and thats it.
I heard i'm suppose to get a service key and a 2nd main key (spare)?
Should i be worried at all that the previous owner may have the other key?
I've changed the license plate since then, and also my address. So i guess the chances of them identifying their car is slim...
But anyway should i go to mits and get the extra 2 keys? What would they charge?

Cheers :).

you are suppose to get 2 keys and 2 remotes.

my mitsu dealer tryed to screw me with only 1 remote... i insisted into getting 2 because thats how the car came factory.

You don't sell a car without the steering do ya :D

when u get another key u have to bring all the keysto get recoded. any keys which dont get recoded will open the doors but wont start the car. its always a good idea to hav a spare.

So even if i get the keys/remotes recoded, the previous owner could just open the car with the key? If i use the remote to lock the car, would opening the door with the key activate the alarm?

Its okay dude, the chances of the previous owner tracking it down are slim.
I only got one key and one remote. You can get a spare key cut for around $50.

Really 3 remotes? i got jibbed lol.
Was going to buy one on ebay, who knows might be buying back the one for my car hehe.
I'm going to get a backup remote, thinking i might go to mits and get a spare master, but can they make me a service one as well?

did you buy the car second hand????? alot of dealers buy their cars at auctions which include alot of ex rental cars, even from interstate, so are only bought from there with one of each. so the other two keys/remotes are probably with the original purchaser. have a look in your handbook to see who was the original owner and try to get into contact with them.

edit* re-read...is secondhand

My new key cost me $70ea + $20 for dealer to program the car.

Same dealer said he's never sold a spare grey key before... didn't think one could. :)

As for TH/TJ-on remotes... I'll be having a few used ones for sale in the coming weeks.

Got a whole bunch on my workbench that I'm in the process of cleaning up,
will be testing them and replacing batteries with good branded Jap cells.

Shoot me up with a TJ remote when you've finished one :).

Yeh car was second hand, though the car was practically brand new, 50,000 kms, still on its original tyres (good tread), jack in the boot was brand new. No tears/stains in the interior. But only 1 dang key and remote lol.

Opening door with an electronically unrecognised key will not disarm the alarm,
so it will go off when the door is opened. Engine immobiliser also not disarmed.

Whether you lock with remote or key it will arm the alarm (flashes SECURITY on dash).
I think you can slam-lock the door too and it'll also arm the alarm.

pray tell - HOW?

Usually can't lock the doors with key in ignition.

Does she know how to slam lock the doors?
You'd have to take key out of ignition to slamlock.

With a sedan, the only other way is to drop your key into boot & slam that shut.
(uhuh, my mum did that once!) I'm too big to squeeze thru skihatch.

Impossible on wagon as tailgate can't be slamlocked, plus can just climb over.

But I'm paranoid & just to be safe, both my 3rd gens have common-coded remotes.
All my remotes will open both cars... works great even when they're parked together.
(Bosch remote has Open & Lock separate buttons... unlike some 3rd party types).

Pretty damned IMPOSSIBLE to lock 4 keys into either 1 car... plus I have a 5th.

hey guys my main remote just died 2day, I’m just wondering do I have to replace the whole unit or what, I have a 2nd remote lucky, its was so weird i was able to lock my car when I went to work and then it just died completely, I don't want 2 spend $60 on another remote again since I just replaced my spare remote when got the 2nd key.

You cant get them on ebay for about $30. I'm pretty sure you can just replace the battery though, pop it open and take a look.

the battery might have gone flat. if u change the battery u have to recode it to the car. its easy and in the owners manual.

Theyre trying to rip you off mate, same thing happened to me last week and I just replaced its battery myself and it was fine again... Go buy a new battery for it and put it in yourself... then reprogram it to the car(as written in owners manual)

Im sure one of the guys from here can help you if need be

If that doesnt work, pull it apart and check the solder joints etc... one of my remotes had broken and I just soldered the joints (Well okay my partner did the soldering) back together and it was all good :)

According to my I paid $10 for 2 batteries (1 per remote-I replaced both in my remotes so I knew when they had been done) at Kmart :)

Its within the first half of the book, under security and locking or something like that.... Its a simple process, Was fairly straight forward from what I read and I managed to get it working within a few min. I have a TH, manual should be similar...

---

Ok just ran out to the car and got my book. Its in Chapter 2 on page 7 (2-7)
I'll type it here...just cos im bored:D

Have all remote control switches that are to be programmed together with you in the vehicle.
(a) To enter programming mode turn the ignition between ACC and ON 3 times within 5 seconds and leave at the ON position. The hazard lamps will flash if you have been successful.
(b) Within 5 seconds of the acknowledgement press any button on the first remote control switch. The hazard lamps flashing once will indicate acceptance of the remote control switch.
(c) Within the next 5 seconds press any button on the next remote control switch to be programmed, This process can be repeated for up to 4 switches.

-----

There you go :)
Cheers,
Anna

Are Energizers lithium or alkaline?

Have seen some alkaline 2032s and they don't last very long,
they drop past 3V pretty quickly.

I usually buy only brandname cells like Toshiba (Jap), Varta (German) or Renata (Swiss);
have also used Sony & Panasonic (both Jap) 2032s for my Apple Newton Messagepad.
Lithium cells stay above 3.1V for much longer.

I bought my TJ2 Magna last week from Agostino's at Nailsworth, got 2 keys and 1 remote. I'd rather have a spare key than a spare remote - can get remotes on eBay for <$40.

FYI I bought a TJ2 2003 Magna Advance with LPG for $12,990 :)

Bought my KJ wagon with 2 remotes & 1 key.

My TH sedan came with 2 keys & 1 remote.

If you've got 2 cars both using Bosch remotes... I now have
my 'personal' bunch with 2 keys and 1 remote which opens both cars.

Best thing ever - can never pickup the 'wrong' key!!
