View Full Version : scrubing after wheel alignment

Hey all
for starters: 2001 VR-X running on LOVELL SUPERLOWS with 19"x8" with 245 RUBBER
I just went in for a wheel alignment... and now the back right hand wheel is scraping like buggery.
Note: the rear wasnt scraping at all before the wheel alignment.
Apparently it was 7mm out on the front and 4mm on the rear.
Its a weird scrapy noise... it doesnt seem to be scraping on the flares...
It doesnt appear to scrap on corners but a hell of alot on power-down...
quite strange.
The same wheel is also now (after wheel alignment) making a tap-tap-tap noise at high speed and a light thud (sounds like a flatt) on low speeds...
I was barely suffering any scraping issues before the alignment, and when it did scrap it was only the fronts on the flares - the rears dont touch the flares... even on hard cornering.
:( :( Any Ideas?
Your 19's are too big with the suspension setup you have!
What kind of suggestions are you looking for? Raise your suspension?

errr  thank you for your guess.
.... I think you missed the point
a) it wasnt scraping before
b) it now has the weird noises
(also remember the scraping and noises is all happening from the same corner)

Are they now scraping on the inside arm now the alignment in the rear is correct? Just take it back to the place you got the alignment and find out where its scraping.
Let me clarify.
Now your wheels are in correct allignment, they are scrapping ie the wheels don't fit when everything is good.
You could go back to the suspension place and ask them to put the allignment back to the incorrect settings, but then you would be chewing through those expensive 19" tyres!

Your ignoring half the issue? that doesnt explain it all - i think.
On the basis something else is not-good (read as: other noises) i can beleive that they have stuffed up something (and i dont know what they could have - hence this thread) or there is two independant issues.
I wouldnt think the latter, as they both began after the wheel alignment - and that sounds unlikely! :)
So im thinking there is more going on that the usual scrubbing issue

I had the exact same setup (19x8s with superlows) and got no noises.. take it to another tyre shop.
TL-R: your advice is very negative ... go away

take it back to them and tell them to re check it to see if its all done correctly. did they take it for a drive afterwards to see if there was any noise?

Not sure if they test drove it - i assume so tho
Even if they did i dunno - J3RK and i picked it up and both drove it back to his house, we didnt even hear the badness or scraping untill we got 5-10mins away from the shop... not sure if i was driving it super super lightly from the shop too there... but the scraping is very noticeable(readas: i have a stock exhaust)
Its all quite strange!
We will go hit them up again in the morning, but any guesses on what could be going wrong would be nice!
The other noises sound almost like i have an egg on the tyre now.... but cant see one!
Hrmmmmm :doubt:

If it is scrapping there is a good chance there is a rub mark on the body or suspension or what ever it is hitting..
id prob take the wheel off and look for the rubbing marks to see what it is hitting.. It def wont be suspension..
If its when you are on the power it will be the body of the car as i had this problem when i got my 20`s.. It was fine on super lows but scrubbed in the rear when i nailed it when i dropped another 1.5inchs..:P
Nothing major. find out what its hitting by looking at it and then make a judgement and fix it..the problem i got now is wheels to big and car to low and the car rubs top of wheel arch under the back seat..
If you wanna talk about scrubbing im the king..:P
My theory is if all four wheel scrub you know you got the biggest wheels that can fit under the guards and that it wont go any lower as its as low as it will go..:P
Worked for me..:)

Thanks guys :)
2 problems isolated.
1 - upon a closer inspection there was indeed a bloody screw hiding in the tyre
.. hence the weird noises and behaviour - right before we found it the rear was acting like a clown car and bouncing on the screw at low speed :bowrofl:
2 - the driver rear tyre is about 5mm away from that arm'ey thing, where as the passenger rear looks to have 10-15mm space and is now now after the wheel alignment scrubbing on it.
i need to now figure out if the wheel-alignment is wacko or my driver side arm'ey thing is different to the left.
I understand that arm changed from s1 too s2... can anyone tell me which leaves the most clearance? ill try and pickup another if need be :)

Yup, we actually ended up smushing some weak paint around in there, too make it more obvious where it was rubbing - we couldnt determine it otherwise. There is some evidence my wheels are touching the upper-housing aswell but so far havent seen the paint there rub away! *fingers crossed*
That said - my superlows havent finished settling yet :)

Can anyone confirm that rear arm thing changes between s1-s2 and the s2 version gives extra clearance? :)

Dont think they did..
My VRX MY02 has a S17 arm which is fine.. the differance wasnt the arch.. it was the offset..
VRX has a narrower offset.. Dont know if sport is the same or ralliart.. only reason i got my 20x8.5`s under the back guards with 245s on them..:P

So the VRX has more room under there? or less?

The VRX has more room under the rear.. i had a standard arm on the rear and my20x8.5 with 245/35`s wouldnt go under the guard and when i got a new vrx one they when straight under.. drivers side was fine..:)

Okay.. mine is a VRX.. i was doing silly things one nite and broke a rear arm.. Mits told me two weeks and i got one from a wrecker the next day for $100(EXEC ARM) Temp fix..
I got my new arm and kicked it under my bed and thought ill put that on when i get my wheels as i will need it as we though the arch was differant like everyone did..
So we tried the 20`s and they fitted.. cleared the arm and all so i was like i didnt even need that bloody arm.. when we dropped the car off the jack the body hit the wheel. wheel stuck out like nearly an inch.. So we tried th other side and it was perfect. Went straight under..
So i went home and change arms.. Put new VRX arm on and went back.. Wheels fit nice.. we put them on a EXEC and they didnt fit. body landed on wheels.. VRX has a narrower offset by about 6mm each side..
See rears in that pic..

After some more investigation with Dr EGO, we have come to the plausable conclusion that the driver rear corner has an R1 ARM, and requires a S17 ARM.
Will locate and report back.

Thanks!!!

Now before people start goin on about what R1 is and S17 is.. They are the rear knuckle arms..
R1 is exec, sports and series 1 VRX.
S17 is series MY02 and series 2 VRX..
Yes there is a differance in the arms.. hense why Jake is having all these problems..
I told him this was his problem and he has done his checks and that appears to be the problem.. we will sort it in the next few days and have the results..:D
EDIT:
Also he has damages on arm on the passangers side and had it replaced.. It was replaced with a S17 which is a VRX series 2 arm and designed for the bigger wheels. so that why he isnt having any problems there.. The drivers arm is a R1 which is designed for 15 and 16 inch wheels..

so let me get this right....
If you want big/bigger rims, you need S17 arms? otherwise you will have scrubbing issues?
how much do these arms cost?
