I was in melb earlier this week and I was looking at a Magna TJ on gas and for some reason there was a hole cut in it and a stubbie holder over the pipe near the air box, I asked wtf is that and my mate goes its coz the air box pops when they are on gas. the same goes for commos and falcs he reckons.
just thought it was some wierd stuff.

they only pop when you have a backfire, if the car backfires on lpg can be very bad and means theres a problem, be it plugs, leads or tune etc

We used to get back blows on our old Falcon ED Wagon all the time from gas. The mechanic spring fitted the air box to stop it from being blown apart.
Turned out the real problem was old leads had broken through the casing and were sparking to the top of the engine block.
But yeah, back blows aren't that much fun. Go to accelerate, then everything dies with a bang, then everything fires up again.

Haven't had a backfire on my TL yet.
As already stated, this mainly happens where the gas system is badly out of tune or something is wrong. As with anything, you keep it maintained and have a quality LPG system installed in the first place you shouldn't have a problem.

On petrol a backfire occurs usually when unburnt fuel is ignited while exiting through the exhaust, causing a loud bang through the exhaust system, can damage mufflers.
On gas a backfire occurs when unburnt LPG/air mixture ignites while it is still in the induction system, can cause damage to airbox and associated components.
Its not something you want to occur, but its not dangerous as such.

I dont now the jist of the LPG back fire but all my life ive been told LPG back fires are real bad..
Yeah back fires are bad.. they are caused by timing.. the timing of spark and valves open early.. its bad either way and can do damage..

AU Faclons had this real bad - most taxi's have the airbox lid held on with occie straps! Pretty common occurance apparently - seen a few with this at mechanics etc.
Just one of those things with that engine it seems... Possibly one of the worst model falcons ever made - they made it too cheap to be competitive in the fleet market.

i used to have a vs for work that backfired all the time through the air box... lol
i hated that car, so i took the air box off so i didnt have to put it back on all the time lol
it lasted about 40,000k's with no air box or filter, im pretty sure if it was gonna light up, it would have long before then :D

I used to blow holes in the side of air boxes in a VR Commodore converted to gas.
Turned out to be a faulty spark plug lead.
Put in a set of leads rated for gas and had no further problems.
:D
Our VP used to backfire on gas because it was a commodore. Never idled properly, randomly spluttered, injectors always gunked up, and the airbox up and piping towards TB just exploded one day. Dad made up a perspex flap on a hinge and masking taped it there, was a common thing to replace the tape after a random explosion. Engine died at 200ks despite being perfectly serviced and babied around. Terrible car
Edit: saw a falcon taxi do it in Sydney CBD once shortly after 9/11, fun watching the reactions.

Errrm that wasn't the car's fault, it was due to a shoddy tune and/or install. My flatmates VN is on gas and started popping, tool it in for a tune-up and it hasn't done it since.

It was constantly in and out of auto elecs and gas specialists, no one ever got it right.
