Hey all,

I've bought a pair of Osram Silverstars (H4) for my 1996 TE Magna (I hope H4 is the right size), now where exactly do these go..haha..I know in the head light compartment, but I've observed there are so many other bulbs there as well (eg the section next to the indicator is used for normal headlight driving and parkers, whilst the section towards the grill has only 1 bulb, which is turned on during hi-beam).

Any hints, tips, guidelines on changing the bulbs? I'm clueless..

Thanks and regards,
iwfc87

k now i dont have a 3rd gen but should be easy, should be the rubber cover that corresponds with the bulb on either side.....so like its usually the big rubber dust cap to the right (for the right headlight) as the High beams are usually on the left (right hand side)

You want Silverstars for your low beam or high beam?? for a Magna's lights...

Low beams are the outer lights, they use H4 55/60s (double filament bulbs).

High beams use H1 (single filament skinny bulb) and are located next to grille.
When you hit high beam BOTH bulbs ie 4 lights all light up together.

Unless you've got Verada/parabolics, then yeah H4 bulbs are used for low beam.

To remove Left side bulb/s...
1) unclip the wiring harness; push in on the narrow side & it'll slide off
2) pull off the rubber boot
3) unclip the spring clip which holds the bulb in
4) bulb falls out

To remove Right side bulb/s...
1) take 2 screws out to remove washer bottle, unclip wire & balance it on shock tower
then unclip the wiring harness; push in on the narrow side & it'll slide off
2) pull off the rubber boot
3) unclip the spring clip which holds the bulb in
4) bulb falls out

Once the new bulbs are in you might want to re-aim them.
Adjuster screws are located in the headlights, they turn some whirly cogs
through 2 long phillips screws. Poke screwdriver thru access holes thru radiator bar.

Low beams are the outer lights, they use H1 55/60s (double filament bulbs).

High beams use H4 (single filament skinny bulb) and are located next to grille.

Damn..I prob bought the wrong size then, but I would actually like to upgrade both, but that becomes a lil costly.

Does anyone know much about the Philips Vision plus range and how they would compare to the silverstar? As I think one of them were $55 which included the 2 main lights and parkers..which would be the second most expensive one..maybe Blue vision or vision plus

Strangely enough, there is a headlamp FAQ on this board that was written by someone to answer these questions...

Yeah, I have actually read that, it was good. Just that it didn't really answer my questions of:

1. Bulb specifications and which is where etc.
2. A how-to guide.
3. How do the Osram's look when juxtaposed with the Philips. :).

I have the Osram Silverstar H7 in my Stanleys, they are same as Narva Plus50s.
They are very nicely bright, nice even white light and pretty decent 'upgrade'.

Have played with the Philips display in Autobarn... think the road-legal ones aren't as bright
and the 2 blue ones are illegal. Pretty darned expensive too even with the 2 free wedges.

Don't bother upgrading your highbeams if you're on a budget,
how often do you use them anyway?

Got brandnew H4 Osrams in my Hella lowbeams, they're nicely bright & decently white too.

Arent H4 for Low beam and H1 for high beam? I swapped over my low beam (h4) Phillips Vision Plus for $20 each at Autobarn. Quite an improvement over the 5 year old stock Orsam bulbs, highly recommend worth doing if you drive in areas without street lights. I have a TJ so it may have different lights/bulb fitting size.

If you do a search I know there are some threads that have some photos on how to do it. Here is a copy/paste from RINA//ART on how to do it.

1 - pop the bonnet and open it
2 - unscrew the round plastic things that are over the rubber seals on the back of the headlight
3 - the black square plastic box looking thing that clips onto the globe needs to be unclipped by pressing on either side and pulling back wards - can be a ***** to get off sometimes
4 - then remove the rubber seal that surround the globe
5 - unclip the retaining wire that holds the globe in the ballast
6 - take globe out
7 - put new globe in WITHOUT touching the glass of the new globes
8 - reclip in the globe using the retaining bit of wire thing
9 - replace rubber seal and reclip on the wire connector box to the globe
10 - replace the black plastic donut shaped screw things to seal the headlight and close the bonnet...

Can anyone else on here confirm if H4's are correct for a TE Low beam?

H4's for Hella (exec headlamp), H7's for Stanley "parabolics"

H1's for highs for both.

Dayum... Heath's right (as always!)

Just checked my packets and yeah the Hellas use H4, Stanleys are H7 for lows.

(I changed both of mine on the same weekend.)

And big tip when doing headlights... don't throw out the 'old' bulbs.
Occasionally your new bulb/s will fail in the first few uses, so good to keep old as spares.
