View Full Version : 2nd gen 3L's higher performance than 3rd gen 3L's??

Well I was bored the other night, really bored and was having a look at the engine specs for the 6G72's (3LV6's) in both the 3rd and second gens and was surprised to see some differences. Now as most people know the 3rd gens run a static compression ratio (scr) of 9:1, but what surprised me was that the second gens run a 10:1 scr. Now as the stroke is the same, this must mean that the pistons are a high compression piston (probably very similar to the rpw ones at $390ea). Looking further I noticed that the 2nd gens also run a different cam profile with more overlap and longer duration, which would lend itself to a higher output/revvier engine.

This could mean that for the 3L 3rd gen owners out there, a relatively cheap mod for you could be to get the pistons and camshaft from a 2nd gen. Although a re-map may also be needed. Has anyone done this?

I'm not sure about that working as the 3rd gen 3.0l is 24v...or am I missing something here?

Well they do have the same bore/stroke relationship. But the cams being the other way around may prove troubesome. There are cheaper ways to get high comp pistons(ACL).

True, I forgot about that. So the camshaft most probably wouldn't work. And probably not the pistons either. Oh well.
