Hi,
Does anyone know anything about getting air bag suspension installed on a magna/verada?
Like who, where and how much
I have lowered suspension at the moment but find that i am constantly hitting the bottom of the car on gutters getting in and out of driveways even thought i go out on the angle. So i thought that it would help out there as well as be a cool mod.
Cheers

Yep i've looked into it.

Places that can do it.

Burnin Customs (Central coast NSW)
Air ride suspension (Melbourne)
Cali Customs (Melbourne)
Carters Customs (Brisbane)
Webs Auto Sport (Wollongong NSW)
Many more as well

It will require an Air cylinder not an actual air bag.

Central price for a kit is about 3K give or take, installed should be abut a grand or so on top. No cuting or anything is involved so 6K seems abit installed but i don't know how much engineering is.

I'm looking at doing it but still researching it all.

Just out of curiousity what size rims you got?

haha i took a steep driveway basically close to side on.. and scraped a rim going sideways lol . The insides of my rims are fked as well... i just dont know how to go over bumps full stop with that angle bs... lol i know the theory just either i go too much angle or not enough... perhaps its the 30 profile lol, perhaps its the fact im too low (but thats not the case, im going lower!)

I dunno if the struts/suspension setup are the same or very similar in the 2nd and 3rd gens but some KR models came out with a active electronically controlled suspension. These had 4 ride heights and three different dampener settings. These would most probably be heaps better than most airbag kits as they still use springs and they also use the airbags to control lift/dive and sway :D. If you want I could post up some of the pages from the KR service manual. Dunno if these'd fit into the existing suspension setup though.

k ppl'z got 2 quotes today, first one from first person to have the first bagged car in aus, and very successful hot rod builder, the second from exhaust brothers.

Quote 1: i dont wanna do it. airbags are not designed for cars with struts and something else, in order for the airbag to go down, it needs to twist, swisting the strut is no good, if car was for everyday use. max get 6 months out of strut. cost 6-7g for kit installed. asked how much for custom made struts that would last. wont last much longer than stock ones, but alot more than the original quote, said he didnt wanna do it. but he will if i want him to take my money. i said thanks, this almost changed my mind.

quote 2: i didnt ask personally, had a mate in there today, he said 2.5k installed. that was it. coz its a reasonably new car its cheaper or something ??? iunno. said cant get kits for magnas so custom one would be made. i think the cost for this is in the quote. i might go in later this week and talk to owner and get all the details i need. and will post them here. i did work experience at exhaust bros a few years ago so shouldnt be to bad. anyways, ill let you all know what i find out when i go in there myself :)

hope this is all useful to you all.

Yeah the hot rod builder sounds like any tradey if they dont want to do the job say a rediculous ammount. You shouldnt need custom made struts, an air struts is an air strut right and its different to a bag. No car really should have an off the shelf kit. Like you have options such as what size lines, vales, tank size, compressors. So every kit will be different somehow. Might be abit of ****ing around getting it in but meh. It's similar to a commo kit.

i went past cali customs but they werent home.... might drop in tomorrow...

i'd be interested in having some kinda set up on my car, im geting coilovers so for a bit more i'll look into air...

i was under the impression though that on struts you need cans not bags.... man been so long since i was into minitrucks etc... and the magna is stacks different so what i know doesn't count :(

nope, there is a special airbag that is used to convert the strut to air, went to cali customs today.... very helpful.... looking at about $5500 drive away! for a good job!!!

A strut

Now your post before doesnt make sense. Convert the strut to air? What are you talking about. Strut to air bag???? Strut to pure oxygen ready to be realised into the atmosphere thru a magic wand?

ok went in to see guys at exhaust brothers yesterday arvo. confirmed 5500 max for kit and install. however, having wide rims (8.5") may make me suffer a little bit more, as i will most likely have to get the guards pumped. so thats extra cash gone aswell. was lookin at gettin 20's also. but not to sure yet. anyways ima hopefully get a consolidation loan and have lots to spare :) and get it done HOPEFULLY. anyhows ill keep yas posted. does anyone know of any magna thats on bags, excluding that diamante in NZ? if so let me know.

13-09-2006, 06:02 AM
you have to be fairly careful as im pretty sure in qld u cant get them engineered unless you have a self levelling system and all this other stuff, i think it might be the same in victoria? That is why every bagged truck or accord is for sale after they get caught in these states. nsw is a bit easier to get it passed though. bags/struts/cans have a tendancy to leak sometimes aswell and you should always have a spare incase a bag/strut/can decides to break. Supposedly its illegal to have it sitting on the ground while parked aswell so you cant really do anything with them. i had a bagged truck and had nothing but trouble with them.

andrewd
13-09-2006, 06:06 AM
yeah air strut......... sorry man i thought wou ment cans.... like the put on hot rods.... i cant read:nuts: they use a special bag on a modified magna strut though, not an off the shelf unit..

dude go to cali customs, he comes highly reccomended, and when i get the cash i will be going there, his work is awesome!! thats his specialty airbags and hydros thats it...

i have to say though i dont know about the exhaust bro's they could be doing good work, but it could be just like getting an engine built at k mart auto if you know what i mean...

the dude at cali has done tons of cars, while i was there he had a few auto salon type cars there, and i've asked around in the industry and he was most reccomended... and i used to work across the road from a big name chassis place and they do american cars and even someone who knows them reccomended cali.. if you see where im going...

he quoted me the same price too....
if you do it get silent valves, unless you want the cops to hear the psssssssstttt!!!!

PUFF_DOGG
13-09-2006, 06:13 AM
meh, exhaust bros have done a fair few cars some of which have appeared in street machine. so they cant be all that bad. and as for the silent valves. bugger them i want every mofo to her them ****in things comin from a mile away. i like attention :)
