Hey all,
i just got new brakes put in yesterday arvo. Today when i was driving to work in a a light shower of rain, i noticed smoke and a bad smell coming from the front tyres,
Is this normal because there new brake pads, and i've been driving in the wet?

dude if it keeps happening mate then get them checked!!
i got new brakes and pads a while ago and my new brembo pads started smoking for the first few hours, took it to my mechanic and he checked them out, he said it was just the pads being new rubbing against the discs, but he told me if it keeps happening then we would have to replace the brake pads!!
But yeh mine were smoking and had a bad smell to them aswell but went away once they were worn in!!!

The new brake pads would explain the smell, as all my pads that i've replaced with new ones have done this.
The smoke however i'm not sure, you said it was raining? Is it possible that it was just steam? (cold rain water hitting hot brake pads = steam).

Easy fix: Ring the place that did your brakes and ask whats the go.........
May sound like Im being harsh, but in reality they work with brakes and will be able to give you a proper answer, whereas we can only speculate and guess etc...
.....welcome to AMC by the way, Hope you enjoy your stay.

I've never had a new set of pads that didn't smell for a few hundred km's. It takes time for the resins and binders in the pad material to properly set, and they do this by changing chemical composition, and give off gases.
I second the steam not smoke coming off them. So long as the brakes are normal, you should be fine.

If you had new rotors put in, then it's smoke from the film of protective oil that they're shipped in. Was it a burning hot smell? If so, then your calipers are probably binding or there's a pad that's constantly contacting the rotor.

Probably just steam, unless you were going hard, ie repeated hard stop from 100 clicks. Smell comes into play anytime you use your brakes more than a grandma. Its the same smell from and old syndey train. When all your brake rotors are glowing red then you have a problem.
